The spinoff series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has never shied away from experimenting with the genres specified in the show. While sci-fi is the main genre, the series’ concept lends itself to bringing various tropes of other narrative styles into the fold. The series has done a musical and has teased a murder mystery in the upcoming season.

The upcoming third season will also reportedly feature a connection to the original series. Showrunner Akiva Goldsman teased that the show had gone to places no other Star Trek had ever been. Considering that many of the original series’ characters appear in the show, it might not be a stretch.

After the popularity of Spock and actor Leonard Nimoy, Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry reportedly wanted to distinguish other series from the original show by reducing the Vulcan presence in subsequent spinoffs. Hence, there was a reduction in Vulcans in the extremely successful spinoff series The Next Generation.

However, the latest series Strange New Worlds might connect to the original series in a bizarre way by increasing the Vulcan presence in the upcoming season. The show is set a few years before the William Shatner starrer and features characters from the original series such as Spock, Kirk, Uhura, and more.

Showrunner Akiva Goldsman mentioned that the upcoming third season of the franchise would go to places that Star Trek had never been before. He said to Variety,

So, as you saw [in the SDCC clip], a lot of people become Vulcans. We are trying to, dare I say, go where we have not gone before when it comes to genre. So besides the tried and true, which is some sci-fi adventure, and certainly our attempt to remember the cadence of at least regularly, there must be a moral to the story, we are spreading our wings.

Rebecca Romjin, who played Una in the series, also backed up Goldsman’s statement saying that they did crazy things in season 3 that might just outdo season 2.

While Star Trek: Discovery was also set a few decades before the original series, by the second season it moved on to the future and had little connection to the events of the ‘60s show. However, the spinoff series Strange New Worlds features the same characters as the original while allowing the makers to experiment with the genre.

In the show, the makers have created a musical episode, a fusion of live-action and animation, and many more. However, the upcoming third season may have just upped the standards to a whole new level. Alive Goldsman mentioned to Collider,

It’s a Hollywood murder mystery… As always we are striving to create a different genre within ours. So there’s a reason for it. It’s not somebody having a dream… Because of that, our actors get to do things that they haven’t gotten to do previously… We do keep trying to push, because we were so delighted ourselves with the musical episode that we kind of were like, ‘Oh, f*ck, what are we going to do now?’

The episode is reportedly directed by series regular Jonathan Frakes.
