Initially released in 2011, the legal drama Suits once again experienced a resurgence in popularity when it debuted on Netflix in 2023. Following a successful run on the streaming platform, the show has now been acquired by the British public broadcaster BBC.
Set in a New York law firm, the legal drama follows the brilliant college dropout Mike Ross, who begins working as a law associate for Harvey Specter, despite lacking a law degree. It originally ran for nine seasons from 2011 to 2019.
BBC Acquires All Seasons of the Hit Legal Drama Suits
BBC has secured the rights to the acclaimed legal drama Suits. Starring an ensemble cast including Gabriel Macht and Patrick J. Adams, the show has received praise for its compelling storytelling and stellar performances of the cast.
The acquisition is part of a broader deal between the BBC and NBCUniversal Global TV Distribution, which also includes the acquisition of two other titles, St. Denis Medical and The Best Man: The Final Chapters. All these shows are set to join BBC’s TV channels and the BBC iPlayer streaming service.
“This is a really exciting and enjoyable trio of star-studded series,” Sue Deeks, head of BBC program acquisition, said as he expressed enthusiasm for acquisition. He further added, “We couldn’t be more delighted to bring them all to BBC viewers,” as per The Hollywood Reporter.
Suits experienced a surge in popularity following its inclusion in the Netflix roster last year. According to Nielsen’s 2023 streaming data, the show amassed a staggering 57.7 billion viewing minutes, securing its position as the most-streamed show of the year. Following the BBC deal, the availability of the show on Netflix in the U.K. remains uncertain.
Suits Creator is Working on an L.A. Based Spin-off
After its resurgence on the streaming platform Netflix, the legal drama is now set to expand its universe with a new spin-off titled Suits L.A. This marks the second spin-off endeavor following a previous series centered around Gina Torres’s character, Jessica Lourdes Pearson, which premiered in 2019 but was canceled after 10 episodes.
Suits L.A. is expected to be set in Los Angeles, with Stephen Amell reportedly taking on the lead role as Ted Black, a former federal prosecutor from New York. Aaron Korsh is spearheading the development of this new spin-off, which will be set in the same universe as the original series but will introduce a fresh ensemble of characters.
In February 2024, NBC greenlit a pilot for the spin-off. While there is no official confirmation so far, it is anticipated that some characters from the original show may have surprise appearances in the new spin-off. As of now, it does not have an official release date.
Suits is available to stream on Netflix and Peacock.
