Out of all the superheroes introduced by the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel is one of the most iconic female superheroines to have ever existed. From a major in the Air Force all the way to becoming a first-tier and one of the strongest Avengers, Larson’s action figure made some remarkable history in the superhero world.
However, there was a time when the Room actress’ debut in Marvel almost seemed unclear as former Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter and some other executives had their own doubts about a new and different inclusion to the already thriving franchise.
Brie Larson Almost Didn’t Make Her Marvel Debut Had It Not Been For Bob Iger
Although Disney took over Marvel in 2009, Bob Iger, the CEO of the House of the Mouse, still had to go through several roadblocks to be able to fully introduce new and different characters to the franchise like Captain Marvel.
This was because former Marvel CEO Ike Perlmutter along with some other executives had several doubts during that time about whether a superhero movie about a woman could actually appease the audience, despite Marvel’s President Kevin Feige already heartily approving to go forward with it.
Delving into the details about the entire experience of ideas and objections on a unique project like that of Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, Iger wrote in his memoir, The Ride of a Lifetime (via Men’s Health):
“I’ve been in the business long enough to have heard every old argument in the book, and I’ve learned that old arguments are just that: old, and out of step with where the world is and where it should be.”
Continuing, he explained how they got the entire matter back in hand and Brie Larson‘s Captain Marvel was finally introduced to the franchise.
“We had a chance to make a great movie and to showcase an underrepresented segment of America, and those goals were not mutually exclusive. I called Ike and told him to tell his team to stop putting up roadblocks and ordered that we put both Black Panther and Captain Marvel into production.”
Not only this but following this decision was the decision to separate Marvel Studios from Marvel Entertainment in 2015, which allowed more creative freedom to the former over the incredibly successful movie franchise.
How Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Performed In The Box Offices Worldwide
Even though Brie Larson was initially unsure of her true capability to bring a superhero like Captain Marvel to life, the actress still performed splendidly and won the hearts of fans worldwide with his compelling on-screen presence.
In fact, her performance and the storyline were so on-point and epic that Captain Marvel ended up breaking records and making history by grossing the biggest opening weekend by any female-led project ever: $455 million at the global box office. Not only this but Brie Larson’s first Marvel film also grossed more than a whopping $1 billion worldwide, pushing the studio’s boundaries.
Just like that, Brie Larson not only surpassed her own expectations with her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as a superheroine but also proved all the Marvel executives, who were opposing her project, wrong.
