Andrew Garfield’s version of Marvel’s Spider-Man saw the star playing the celebrated webbed superhero in two standalone films, before appearing in a cameo in MCU’s Spider-Man: No Way Home along with Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. The Amazing Spider-Man came out in 2012, and its box office success produced a sequel in 2014.
The second film though, was not as well received as the first one and did not receive favorable critiques as well. This failure, therefore, put a stop to any chances of a 3rd film in the series. But The Amazing Spider-Man 3 could have been a distinct possibility based on Garfield’s assessment of how the narrative was structured.
The Amazing Spider-Man 3 Had The Potential To Be Made
Andrew Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man series was more emotional and serious takes that delved into deeper aspects of Spider-Man’s past. While Garfield’s performance was praised in both films, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 unfortunately did not set the box office alight. The lukewarm critical and audience responses have arrested the possibility of making a 3rd film which was very much on the cards at the time.
Based on Andrew Garfield’s assessment of the first two films, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 could have had the potential to carry the story forward in a cohesive and coherent manner. In an in-depth interview with Film4, the cast of The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sat down to discuss the film. Garfield pointed out the beauty of the narrative that allowed a seamless continuation of the character’s story from the first to the second film.
”It was really exciting to get back to it because we had a foundation that was really solid. Each step led to the next. It’s simple filmmaking 101 of course. We were lucky in this respect.”
If Garfield’s words are any indication, The Amazing Spider-Man 3 would have continued Peter Parker aka Spider-Man’s narrative smoothly. Unfortunately, this dream is still to be realized, 10 years after the 2nd film.
Andrew Garfield Was Excited To Be In Spider-Man: No Way Home For This Reason
One of the most iconic moments in any superhero film was the reunion of three versions of Spider-Man played by Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Apart from excelling individually in the scene, the three actors shared heartwarming chemistry that worked wonders with Marvel fans. Speaking to Variety, Garfield recalled being completely impressed with the script and the way the 3 characters were brought into it.
“The pitch was really, really enticing. They said, ‘You played this character in your way and what would you want to explore if you had an opportunity? If you were dumped into this other universe and faced with this younger you and this older you, how will you respond?’”
This enticing possibility which was explained to The Social Network star, was the only incentive he needed to sign on the dotted line. The film and Garfield’s cameo went on to garner huge praise from critics and audiences.
