As the initial release of The Accountant accumulated commercial success at the box office, the movie felt ripe to be franchised. However, within a few years, the project seemingly vanished into thin air.

After almost five years, with little to no update on The Accountant sequel, director Gavin O’Connor and Ben Affleck teamed up to share an announcement alongside co-star Jon Bernthal. Revealing their plans for the long overdue The Accountant 2, the stars broke the news during the ReelBlend podcast in 2021. However, unfortunately, there haven’t been any further updates.

The 2016 movie, The Accountant, by Gavin O’Connor, was one of the best crime thrillers of that particular year. Starring Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal as brothers who live two very different lives, the movie almost turned the former into the next John Wick.

Turning into a surprise smash hit, at the box office, The Accountant earned a staggering $155M. Hailed by fans and critics with mixed reviews, the movie earned a 52% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Witnessing the stellar success of the film, the director found the movie ripe to be franchised.

Thus, not too long after the initial release of the movie, O’Connor and Affleck decided to work on the project for a sequel. However, the project simply vanished into thin air, as the duo got engaged in other films. Nonetheless, almost five years after the rumor of working on a sequel, Ben Affleck and Gavin O’Connor shared an update on The Accountant 2 during a podcast.

Updates On Ben Affleck’s $155M Movie Sequel

Appearing on CinemaBlend’s ReelBlend podcast in 2021, the director Gavin O’Connor and Ben Affleck broke the news of working on the long overdue project, in a rather interesting way. Confirming about working on The Accountant 2, O’Connor affirmed the long-awaited return of Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff.

There will not be a Way Back sequel, but we are doing an Accountant sequel. We literally just closed that deal. We’re doing The Accountant again.” Gavin O’Connor shared. 

However, despite assuring fans about working on the sequel in 2021, The Accountant crew simply went silent following the announcement. Now that it’s been 2 years since the duo revealed their plans for the sequel, fans are waiting to know when the movie might hit the theatres.

The news I can give you right now is that it’s a work in progress. We’re working on the script right now and we all have high hopes that it’s going to move forward as we planned, but yes, we’re all excited about it and we’re hoping to see it come out very soon as well.” producer Mark Williams shared

Stating that the stellar cast of the Gavin O’Connor-helmed film will return to the silver screen, Mark Williams carefully shared limited details about the sequel with Screenrant in 2022. Thus, ever since then, there have been no further updates about the movie. So, all we can do is hope for The Accountant 2 to hit the theatres by 2024.
