On-screen romances aren’t news. Actors develop feelings for their co-stars every now and then on movie sets, an even more prevalent phenomenon when the characters they’re portraying are head over heels in love with each other. Take Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart for instance, whose on-screen chemistry in Twilight stirred into real life, or Johnny Depp and Winona Ryder who got engaged just five months after they first started dating during Edward Scissorhands.
While these couples clearly weren’t the endgame for each other, their amorous attachment in front of the cameras did slither its way into real life. So, when Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss depicted one of the most beloved “It” couples in The Matrix film series, fans couldn’t help but question the nature of their relationship when the cameras weren’t rolling.

The Matrix is considered to be one of the most lauded sci-fi action franchises all across the globe, that is before 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections bombed at the box office, of course. Even so, Keanu Reeves‘ Neo and Carrie-Anne Moss‘ Trinity resembled a power couple in the Wachowskis’ film series, especially in The Matrix Reloaded when their on-screen chemistry was off the charts.
But, as it turns out, their romantic endeavors only existed in the action-packed script of the Matrix saga. Their ride-or-die friendship, however, definitely transcended professional bounds.
Talking to EW, Moss, 55, remarked how theirs was a “soul friendship”, the flame of which will never snuff out. “We’ve been through this experience together as partners,” she said. “The only way I can describe it is like a soul friendship.” She also pointed out how she’d had the pleasure of witnessing her co-star and good friend Reeves, grow into a connoisseur of action over the last two decades. “I’m in awe of it,” the Canadian actress gushed.
Even Reeves, 58, had nothing but love and respect for his co-star and always enjoyed collaborating with her on the Matrix films. “We love and trust each other and enjoy working together,” the John Wick star claimed in an old interview.
So, no, the two didn’t strike any relationship that extended beyond their platonic equation. But their friendship is certainly iconic, one which both of them would always cherish. “I’m fiercely protective of our friendship, I know I can count on Keanu and he on me,” Moss told TIME.

Reeves has been dating Alexandra Grant for nearly 5 years now. Although they first crossed paths way back in 2009 at a dinner party, the Constantine star didn’t get romantically involved with the 50-year-old visual artist before 2018. That was also the time when the couple made lovely red carpet appearances, all dappled in charm and freshly soaked in love and made their relationship official.
The Memento actress, on the other hand, has been happily married to her beau, Steven Roy, ever since 1999, when the first installment in the Matrix franchise broke records. Moss also shares two sons and a daughter with her husband.
