Part of the reason why One Piece live-action became a major success on Netflix was the ability of the creators to adapt every scene, be it emotional or a fight scene to the perfect depth. They may have made some modifications to the storyline but their portrayal of the scene stamped a similar impression as the anime and manga series did for the fans. The most difficult part of the filming was to enact action sequences properly and not only make it look real but also keep up with the expectations fans had.
One Piece’s live-action stunt coordinator Koji Kawamoto explained how most of the stunts and sequences were done by the cast itself and very little CGI was used in terms of fighting scenes. One such instance that held the most importance was Zoro balancing his third sword in his mouth, which was real and not CGI.
Koji Kawamoto Talks About The Most Difficult Part For Mackenyu
While talking to Screenrant, Kawamoto explained the most difficult aspects Mackenyu had to face while playing Zoro and recreating his sword fights. He said that not only carrying three swords was a difficult part but also using the third sword in a fight was a challenge. He stated:
“Unlike a normal samurai, Zoro wears his sword on the opposite side, so just getting used to that was a challenge, but fighting with the sword in his mouth was the most difficult part.”
Mackenyu who is known for his sword-fighting skills had to face the challenge of using not two but three swords, and one of them was in his mouth. To recreate a scene while being so occupied is a challenge in itself. Another fact that adds stars to their talent is the third sword in Mackenyu’s mouth was not CGI. They made that happen with a lot of hard work and talent.
Mackenyu Mastered Balancing a Sword in His Mouth
Kawamoto while explaining Mackenyu’s struggle emphasized the fact that it was not all CGI. He explained funnily that they were able to make it happen with dummy weapons, a little CGI, and Mackenyu’s teeth. He said:
“I think it is quite difficult. We made it happen with dummy weapons, the power of CG, and the power of Mackenyu’s teeth.”
Mackenyu is already familiar with anime and manga live-action adaptations. Not only that, but Mackenyu is proficient in combat sports and sword skills. Mackenyu’s combat choreography abilities are unparalleled. His attention to detail in body movement and transitions is a work of art in its own right. Furthermore, the ability to use three swords while enacting a scene necessitates a new level of commitment.
