Cobra Kai Season 6 is about to throw a roundhouse kick to the status quo. Known for reigniting our love for The Karate Kid, the show’s taking a major gamble: delving into the mysterious past of Mr. Miyagi.

In a recent interview with io9 (via Gizmodo), creator Josh Heald opened up about this surprising shift. For five seasons, Mr. Miyagi, Daniel LaRusso’s beloved mentor, has been a revered figure and a symbol of karate wisdom. But the sixth season promises to crack open that Miyagi-Do dojo of our minds. Heald revealed:

This was something we’ve wanted to do for a while. We started thinking less about Miyagi as an idea and more about Miyagi as a man. And that became kind of an interesting story we wanted to start telling.

Why the sudden switch? Mr. Miyagi has always been a bit of an enigma. While we’ve only seen glimpses of his past through Daniel’s eyes, season 6 promises to rewrite that narrative. But here’s the rub: Miyagi is practically a saint in the Karate Kid universe. Will revealing his flaws tarnish his legacy? Is Cobra Kai risking it all by messing with such a beloved character?

While this change can make or break the show, the creators seem to be aware of the tightrope they’re walking. Josh Heald assured fans they’re approaching this with respect. Sharing the relatable concept that even heroes have secrets, he explained:

We wanted to tell a grounded story about somebody encountering an additional truth about a parent or grandparent. We felt like that was a great place to start that character journey and that story, because it honors Mr. Miyagi as a man and not just as a perfect being.

So, will season 6 be a glorious crane kick to our nostalgia or an awkward missed punch? Only time (and maybe a rewatch of the first Karate Kid) will tell. One thing’s for sure, Cobra Kai isn’t afraid to throw some serious punches. Let’s just hope they land and don’t leave us feeling like Daniel after Kreese sweeps the leg at the All Valley Tournament.
