Christopher Nolan, the director responsible for making this generation smarter and more interested in physics, had a childhood dream. Talking about how several movies influenced the veteran director when he was a child, the director was humbled by his memories.
Talking about the creator of the Star Wars franchise, George Lucas, and Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. Citing these two people as his inspiration for his 2014 masterpiece Interstellar, Christopher Nolan wants nothing more than to leave this Earth.
Christopher Nolan Was Inspired By George Lucas And Stanley Kubrick!
Being a kid born in the 1970s, Christopher Nolan’s childhood saw the rise of George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise. Alongside the space opera, the director also saw Stanley Kubrick’s magnum opus, 2001: A Space Odyssey getting re-released in theaters over the years for people to see.
In an interview with The New York Times, the director revealed how these movies essentially poured curiosity into his little brain. Stating how he was attracted to the concept of space and the universe from a young age, the Oppenheimer director revealed that the above-mentioned movies served as an inspiration for him during the making of his 2014 masterpiece starring Matt Damon and Matthew McConaughey, Interstellar.
“I saw Star Wars when I was 7, and the movie changed everything for people my age. They re-released 2001 on the basis of that success and I went to see it with a bunch of my friends. We [all said after watching it], “We don’t know what the hell that means, but it’s exciting.” We just wanted spaceships, we wanted space, we wanted that experience of leaving the Earth.”
Well, we are glad that the director got to see these iconic movies during his childhood that made him reach out and grasp the concepts of physics and space. Although his film Interstellar was all praise for being scientifically possible, there were several moments when the director wanted to bend some rules but notable physicist Kip Thorne wouldn’t allow it.
Christopher Nolan Wanted To Break The Rules of Physics
It has been a proven fact by Einstein that nothing can be faster than the speed of light. Several hypotheses have been made about traveling faster than light but all equations fail to discern the system at that point. While making Interstellar, director Christopher Nolan hired renowned physicist Dr. Kip Thorne to oversee the scientific accuracy of the movie.
Although Nolan had specially hired Thorne for no discrepancies during filming, there were several clashes between the director and the scientist on set. As per IMDB trivia, Dr. Kip Thorne spent two weeks trying to convince the director of the idea of traveling faster than light.
