During a recent appearance on Stationhead, former One Direction singer Zayn Malik reflected upon his past while setting some new goals for his future. Currently gearing up to release his fourth studio album, Room Under the Stairs, Malik offered his fans a much-awaited acknowledgment of how great One Direction used to be, before he bid adieu to the band.
Revealing that he has been listening to One Direction’s back catalog lately, Zayn Malik addressed how his decision to pursue a solo career broke the band. Meanwhile, the singer who previously collaborated with artists like Taylor Swift, Sia, M.I.A., and Timbaland, recently noted that he wants to work with one Grammy winner.
Zayn Malik Acknowledged the Grandeur of One Direction
Launching his solo career in 2016 after splitting from One Direction, Zayn Malik created his prominence in the music industry by collaborating with popular icons and releasing timeless hits like Pillowtalk. Currently set to release his new album on 17 May, as a follow-up to his 2021 release Nobody Is Listening, Malik appears for an interview on Stationhead, via Billboard.
Addressing his career so far, Zayn Malik revealed that Grammy winner Miley Cyrus was next on his wish list of collaborators. “I’d like to do a collaboration with her,” Malik stated. Discussing how he had been a fan of the singer, Malik claimed that he wishes to do “something really cool together”. Speaking directly to Cyrus during the interview, the former One Direction member asked the songstress to contact him.
“I like her recent music a lot, it’s crazy. She’s got a sick voice and I think we could do something really cool together, especially in line with what my new record sounds like. Miley, if you heard this, and you’re interested, I’m here, let’s do something.”
After speaking about his future plans, Zayn Malik took a walk down memory lane as he admitted to listening to the decades-old music that he made with his One Direction bandmates. Acknowledging the grandeur of their popular boy band, from back in the day, Malik hailed it as “good times”.
Does Zayn Malik’s Comments Hint at One Direction Reunion?
During his appearance on Stationhead, Zayn Malik addressed how things were good when he made music with his friends Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan. But unfortunately, Malik’s decision to leave the group in 2015 and make a solo career eventually wrecked the band.
“I’ve been listening to a bit of One Direction music recently, reminiscing. Good times. We made some good music as a band. We were pretty good.”
Ironically, Zayn Malik’s acknowledgment during the interview took place exactly nine years after he announced his departure from the band. This particular coincidence tickled fans’ curiosity as they believed that Malik was perhaps hinting at a potential reunion. Although there has been no official confirmation about a meet-up between the members, fans have always been hopeful.
Initially forming on the 2010 series of X Factor via Seatunique, One Direction went on to earn the status of a global pop phenomenon. Selling over 50 million albums worldwide, the boyband witnessed great success. But then with each member going separate ways, fans have been seeking their long-awaited return, in the form of a reunion.
Therefore, following Zayn Malik’s comments, fans immediately grabbed the opportunity to circulate another share of potential One Direction reunion rumors, with no positive update. Although previously Liam Payne teased the possibility of a member’s return, nothing was confirmed thereafter.
