There’s no doubt that Bethesda’s Fallout franchise is in its Renaissance era at the moment. The franchise was propelled back into the limelight with a massively successful TV show, and Bethesda is doing everything it can to pull players, both old and new, to the wasteland, especially in Fallout 4.

Fallout 4 is by far the most crucial title in the series, and it does a lot of things correctly that other Fallout games struggle with. The game’s storyline is more compelling than Fallout 3, makes mods easily accessible, and even allows console players to mod the game. That’s not all; the game features one of the questing systems that’s been directly borrowed from The Elder Scroll V: Skyrim.

Fallout 4‘s Popular Questing System Has Been Taken From Skyrim

After Bethesda and Todd Howard reinvigorated the Fallout franchise with 2008’s Fallout 3, they followed this up with the popular Fallout 4 in 2015. Set approximately a decade after Fallout 3, the game takes place in The Commonwealth, a survivor territory that’s based around Boston and the surrounding parts of New England. The game featured tons of new features and systems, one of those being the questing system.

In an interview with The Guardian, Howard touched upon the various aspects of Fallout 4’s development and gave us insight into the various design decisions. Howard also talked about Fallout 4‘s questing system and how they’ve done a “better job” than what was seen in Skyrim.

“I can’t spoil it, but we’re doing a better job than we’ve ever done,”

Fallout 4‘s questing system was a major revolution compared to the previous entries in the franchise. Alongside the main, side, and additional questlines, it also featured the “radiant quest system.” Bethesda’s development team took the system right out of their previous hit, Skyrim, and further fleshed it out to alleviate player’s experience with the world around them in Fallout. The way players tackle these quests determines the game’s ending, how NPCs behave, and other aspects of the game.

Even to this date, Skyrim‘s questing system is regarded as one of the best ones we’ve ever seen in video games. Both large and small quests can be found on every corner, and anything and everything can be worthy of the Dragonborn’s attention. Right from retrieving ancestral shields to helping out bullied children, players have plenty of tasks to perform. It’s going to be really exciting to see what Bethesda can do with the questing system in the upcoming The Elder Scroll 6.

When is Bethesda Going to Release Fallout 5?

Fallout 5 release date | Steam

With Amazon’s new Fallout TV show out now and the controversial yet exciting update to Fallout 4, longtime Fallout fans have already started wondering when the next entry in the iconic post-apocalyptic video game series will be released.

Unfortunately, Fallout 5 isn’t going to come out for a very longtime. Howard stated in an interview back in 2022 that that’s Bethesda’s current focus in Elder Scrolls 6, and the next entry in the Fallout franchise will likely come after that.

Bethesda has repeated multiple times that currently, The Elder Scrolls 6 is the studio’s main focus after it wrapped up work on the space RPG Starfield, which debuted in late 2023. Considering the fact that Xbox’s Head Phil Spencer said during last year’s Microsoft trials that The Elder Scroll 6 is years away, it’s safe to assume we’re unlikely to hear about Fallout 5 or its release for years to come.
