Taika Waititi may have performed spectacularly on the big screens, but he has performed even better while working with Marvel. That is, with Thor: Ragnarok, at least. Not only did the film become the highest-earning release in the Thor movie series (it grossed about $855 million worldwide), but it also somewhat saved the Mjollnir wielder’s franchise after the not-so-good Thor: The Dark World.
That was also why he was kept on board to direct Thor: Love and Thunder as well. However, this sequel proved to be disastrous, and rumors have been floating around that Kevin Feige has reportedly shoved Waititi aside for Thor 5. The filmmaker’s take on this? He is apparently in an ‘open relationship’ with the franchise.
Taika Waititi Is In An ‘Open Relationship’ With Marvel
Taika Waititi may have done wonders while helming Thor: Ragnarok for the Thor film series, but, like they say, luck runs out at one point or another, and that’s exactly what happened with Thor: Love and Thunder. And–let’s be honest–Thor 4 was actually a bit too childish and out of line (even Chris Hemsworth agrees), so the fact that it wouldn’t be as big of a masterpiece as Thor 3 was a given.
Thus, reports have been surfing around for the past month that Kevin Feige has decided to shove off the filmmaker for the fifth Thor movie rumored to be in development by the Marvel Studios. When asked about the matter by Business Insider, the What We Do in the Shadows actor had this to say:
“I wouldn’t know if that’s accurate,” Waititi said. “I know that I won’t be involved.”
While this more or less confirms the reports that the director will no longer be helming the Thor film series, the Jojo Rabbit star claims that a major reason behind this is because of his own prior engagements in his other works. Furthermore, he even said:
“I love Marvel, I love working with them. I love Chris [Hemsworth].”
Not only this but Waititi also went on to confess how he has no ill feelings whatsoever for Marvel, further joking that he is in an ‘open relationship’ with the franchise.
“I would never feel like they are cheating on me. We’re in an open relationship, and it’s like if they want to see other people, I’m happy for that. I’d still get back into bed with them one day.”
Taika Waititi Is More Focused On His Other Projects For ‘6-7 Years’
During the same interview, Taika Waititi went on to share what he is currently preoccupied with.
“I’m going to concentrate on these other films that I’ve signed on for.”
The ‘other films’ actually include a project on Alejandro Jodorowsky’s graphic novel, The Incal, for which the filmmaker is working on a big-screen adaptation; and his much-awaited Star Wars movie, which is currently in development. “It’s still marinating. I’ve been writing it,” Waititi said about the Star Wars film.
But even that’s not all! Before fully focusing on these other projects, the Thor: Ragnarok director is more focused on one other project that he plans to be his next movie: Klara and the Sun, which will be based on the masterpiece novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro.
“So that’s six, seven years gone, I’d imagine another ‘Thor’ would be a lot sooner than that.”
Keeping all of these prior engagements of his in mind, it would truly be a long time before fans will be able to see another one of Taika Waititi’s projects for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. (That is if Marvel decides to bring him back!)
