Lisa Bonet Left Bill Cosby’s Show After Getting Pregnant

Bill Cosby and Lisa Bonet were not on good terms behind the production of The Cosby Show. The actress was engaged, and later married, to Lenny Kravitz, whom Cosby allegedly did not approve of. When Bonet was removed from the series, she was transferred to a spin-off show, A Different World.

Her character, Denise Huxtable, goes to college. Director Debbie Allen worked with Bonet, but it was short-lived following the actress’ shocking termination from the show. Apparently, the Angel Heart star was pregnant with her daughter Zoë Kravitz, so Allen and Bonet broke the news to Cosby.

Allen shared in an interview via YouTube how Cosby reacted when they informed him of Bonet’s pregnancy. She recalled:

I said, ‘Well, we have some things that we want to tell you.’ He said, ‘What is it? Are you pregnant?’ And then we were like, ‘Oh my God.’ Then he said well what is so different about it? He looked at me, he said, ‘You were pregnant, your sister was pregnant, and so now what?’

Allen thought that they could use the situation to incorporate it into the show, believing it would make the story more interesting and inspiring to the audience. Cosby was not amused by this idea. The director continued:

He was like, ‘You know what, Debbie? No. She’s pregnant, Denise Huxtable is not pregnant, Lisa Bonet is pregnant, not Denise. So no… No, you can’t have it, no we’re not gonna do it, no.’

Bonet was then removed from the spin-off sitcom A Different World.

Bill Cosby served prison time for three years after allegedly drugging and assaulting several women. Bonet has once revealed to Net-A-Porter that she felt this specific “energy” from the comedian:

There was no knowledge on my part about his specific actions, but… There was just energy. And that type of sinister, shadow energy cannot be concealed… If I had anything more to reveal, then it would have happened a long time ago. That’s my nature. The truth will set you free.”

Bonet eventually went back to The Cosby Show after her daughter was born. She left in 1991 but was no longer invited for the series finale. The couple finalized their divorce in 1993, and in 2017, the actress married Aquaman star Jason Momoa. Unfortunately, they also separated in 2022.
