But the kiss was for a tactical purpose, which was not genuinely romantic. Still, fans were enthusiastic about the idea of them being together. The fans’ speculation extended beyond actors on-screen chemistry, with rumors circulating that the two stars were also dating in real life.

Their relationship is strictly platonic, and no on-screen romantic relationship could ever affect it. Besides all this, Chris Evans and Scarlett Johansson have never been romantically involved with each other, despite all the rumors.

As it turned out, a romantic relationship didn’t materialize between Steve and Natasha in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Natasha ended up getting attracted to Bruce Banner, while Steve developed feelings for CIA Agent Sharon Carter. As the Black Widow star told ET:

“I don’t think a romance has ever really been in the air for these two. Sorry to disappoint. They have such a mutual respect for one another, personally and professionally, that I don’t even think there’s room for a romance in this. We’ve got a world to save.”

Scarlett Johansson made it clear that there has never been a romantic spark between her character and Evans’ character in The Winter Soldier, dispelling any such rumors. She admitted that their relationship leaves no room for romance —  both onscreen and offscreen.

Chris Evans said to the L.A. Times (via Screen Rant):

“It’s not really defined, I think that’s what makes it more dynamic. It’s what makes it more similar to life. Not every single male and female bond is going to be rooted in romance. Sometimes movies make things too perfect.”

Over this, Johansson added:

“But the chemistry is there, which is important.”

The actress continued by saying that just because “they’re not romantically involved doesn’t mean that they’re not still attracted to each other as people.”

The actress cleared all the doubts about her and Evan’s relationship, which is nothing more than a warm friendship. The duo shared the screen in eight films over the years and established themselves as one of contemporary cinema’s most loved onscreen pairs.
