While Johnny Depp may be an acclaimed and globally renowned star, it’s no secret that he’s endured a rocky past comprising substance abuse and mental health issues, all of which calcified owing to a troubled childhood and familial mayhem. The same played a major, if not a monumental role in his case against Amber Heard as he explained how his former years impacted him as an individual and a parent.
In a surprising twist of events, however, it appears that the Golden Globe-winning actor may have molded the truth about his childhood during the trial to his advantage.
Johnny Depp’s Accidental Fixer is a jarring new book by Paul Barresi – a private investigator hired by Heard to dig into her ex-husband’s proverbial dirt – wherein the author seemingly pulls the curtain on Depp’s account of his abusive mother, Betty Sue Palmer (via Radar Online).
In his testimony, Depp, 61, described his mother in a way that “drew parallels” to Heard, 38, alluding to both women as malicious aggressors while “suggesting similarities” between him and his father who happened to be victims of cruel, dysfunctional wives. “However, what I uncovered starkly contradicted the courtroom narrative,” Barresi wrote in his book.
Johnny testified that his family moved frequently because of his mother, or rather, the ‘fire in her feet’. While this may have been partially true, I discovered that the primary driver behind the frequent relocations was his father’s struggle to find steady work.
Barresi further added how the sudden egress of the Platoon star’s father along with his mother’s failed suicide attempt resulted from the former’s indiscretions after he fell for a co-worker who he’d ultimately married, only to break up with her.
A Quick Look Into Johnny Depp’s Familial History
Growing up, Depp underwent turbulent times as a kid who was ill-treated not only physically but also emotionally and psychologically. While testifying during the Depp v. Heard trial, the Alice in Wonderland star claimed that his late mother used to hit him and his siblings as opposed to their “kind” and “non-confrontational” father who too, fell prey to Palmer’s torrent of abuse at times (via People).
The verbal abuse, the psychological abuse, was almost worse than the beatings. The beatings were just physical pain. The physical pain, you learn to deal with. You learn to accept it. You learn to deal with it […] There was never a moment when my father lost control and attacked my mother or hit my mother or even said a bad thing to my mother.
Depp contended that his mother’s violence knew no bounds, so much so that she’d even thrown things like an “ashtray” or “a telephone” and hit her kids in their heads. The actor’s account of Palmer matched that of his sister, Christie Dembrowski who too, had testified in court about bearing the brunt of their mother’s brutality.
Meanwhile, Depp Sr., despite being met with Palmer’s verbal and physical lashings, would remain “stoic” in the face of anguish. “He was able to maintain his calm, and his composure. He was able to maintain his relationship with his children,” he said of his father. “He is a good man.”
