It was the winter of 1992 when Kevin Conroy voiced the iconic character of Bruce Wayne aka Batman in Batman: The Animated Series. Based on DC Comics and airing on Fox Network, the series was quite popular at that time.
But who knew that the animated series would have an effect on the kids watching the show at that time? In an old interview, Kevin Conroy talked about the reception he got when he voiced the character of Batman in Batman: The Animated Series!
Kevin Conroy Felt Humbled By People’s Love For Him!
There is no doubt that Kevin Conroy’s voicing of Batman is one of the finest castings that the world has ever seen. Voicing the character of Batman for two decades, Conroy ultimately passed away in 2022 and the world mourned the actor’s loss.
In an interview back in 2014, Kevin Conroy once talked about how he seemed to agree that his portrayal of Batman had an effect on people. In his interview with DC, here’s what he had to say about his portrayal of Batman.
“I think it may be that! It really does seem to resonate. I’ve only recently set up a Twitter account for myself, and the response I get pretty regularly from fans is so heartfelt. People talk about how the show affected them twenty years ago when they were growing up, and how they’re now introducing their kids to it.”
He further continued,
“People talk about Batman on such an intimate, adult level. You’re not talking about a cartoon. You’re really talking about a character who’s very close to a lot of people.”
Voicing alongside Kevin Conroy was fellow actor Mark Hamill who voiced the character of Joker. When the interviewer asked Conroy about him and Hamill recording together, Conroy stated that it was almost like a rule that they record their lines together!

Most fans know that after Conroy’s death, Mark Hamill also retired from voicing the role of Joker in the DCAU. The 2014 interview is proof of how good their friendship was and how they liked each other’s company. As the interview continued, Conroy was asked whether he and Mark Hamill ever recorded lines together. Here’s what the Batman voice actor had for an answer:
“Oh, we recorded together almost as a rule! If you’re acting in a vacuum, it’s just never as good. So she [Andrea Romano] always insists on everyone being together. The bookings for all of Batman: The Animated Series were done as radio plays where she’d have all the cast in a studio together, and as a result, those recordings were phenomenal.”
He further continued,
“So Mark and I would work together as a rule, and we’ve always worked really well together. He’s a very talented guy. And talk about someone with knowledge about the history of animation! He has an amazing animation collection and almost an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of the genre.”
In the end, Batman: The Animated Series ran for 4 seasons and aired its final episode in November 1995. The animated series received a rating of 9/10 on IMDB and a whopping 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and is available to stream on Max in the U.S.
