Overwatch 2 Season 9 is on the horizon. Overwatch 2 is a first-person shooter developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment that was released in 2022. It serves as a replacement for the first installment which was released in 2016. Overwatch 2 is purely an online player-versus-player game with no offline mode or campaign.
There are several game modes in Overwatch 2 but the main one players enjoy playing is Escort, where you have two teams of five players on opposite sides of the map While there is a payload in the middle of the map, each team has to stay within the vicinity of the payload to escort it to the opposing players spawn area while trying not to get eliminated and eliminating the opposing players.
Overwatch 2 Season 9 release date
With 26,040,837 active players in the last 30 days, Overwatch 2 is still a massively popular game. Although Blizzard has not announced an official release date, many speculate it will drop on February 20, 2024, based on Season 8’s battle pass timer. This also lines up with the developer’s regular season release schedule.
Not so long ago, at Blizzcon, late last year, developers promised massive changes to the competitive mode in season 9. They are removing 5 wins out of 15 matches to rank up to replace this with a constant progression bar, so you will always be able to see how close you are to your next rank. These changes will also see a new rank added, called Ultimate, which will be higher than Grandmaster.
The latest update for Overwatch 2 doesn’t seem to have all the fans on board, many are on the fence after certain patch notes had previously been leaked, where players can see a massive amount of change, such as changes to all of the playable characters health, shield, and armor. In addition to this, the DPS classes are receiving a new passive, with Support receiving a tweak to their self-heal passive, with all Hero ultimates costs increasing by 10%.
Aaron Keller takes to Socials
Aaron Keller is a member of the Blizzard team, he is the current game director of Overwatch 2. Earlier in January, Aaron Keller took to the social platform X to talk about self-healing passive for all roles, which was followed by a picture titled Director’s Take: Our Development Values, Part 1 with a link that takes you to an article. Aaron Keller said the following:
“Self-Healing passive for all roles?!? We’re back with the first Director’s Take of 2024. It’s the first in a series going over our values and vision for the coming year… and there’s a few juicy nuggets in it. Check it out!”
Aaron Keller received criticism from players, thinking this was the only change in season 9, but Keller reassures fans that there are a plethora of changes coming for season 9.
