Godzilla and Kong have returned to the big screens with a bang, exceeding all expectations! Released this Friday, the movie is performing exceptionally well. Initial predictions speculated the opening weekend collections to be $55 million which could eventually balloon up to $75 million.

However, now that the numbers are officially in, it can very well be said that Godzilla vs. Kong: The New Empire has the potential to become bigger than ever. With the film earning $37 million on its domestic opening day, it surpassed Godzilla vs. Kong’s $32.2 million weekend collections.

Not only that, but the movie also surpasses its predecessors, Kong: Skull Island and Godzilla: King of the Monsters, which earned $61 million and $47.8 million respectively. This achievement makes it the second highest-grossing opening in the whole Godzilla-Kong franchise after 2014’s Godzilla, which debuted at $93.2 million.

As per Deadline, although it may not secure the top spot for the overall opening weekend unless it receives a significant boost on Easter Sunday, there’s still ample opportunity for it to shatter records.
