Oscar nominations may be almost as prestigious as being awarded with the achievement itself, and Adam Driver has secured two of them in his career so far. But in his last two projects, the star portrayed two of the most influential and iconic individuals in Italian history, which got everyone thinking about whether the star has a thing for choosing roles of Italian nationalities. To this, the star replies with a curt no, saying that people should not look at it that way, especially if it were only two times in his career, which may make John Leguizamo upset.

Oftentimes than never, a star’s portrayal of a certain character in one of their film projects may influence their careers by typecasting them in one-dimensional roles similar to the ones that made them famous. But Adam Driver was able to steer away from that phenomenon by contributing to severely diversified roles in his career, thus leading to his two Oscar nominations so far.

But after his latest depiction of Enzo Ferrari in Michael Mann’s latest film, the star’s resume was filled with portraying two influential Italians, who steered the media towards a new theory.

Seeing this being popularized by the media, The Last Duel star was quick to shoot down the idea that he has a thing for playing Italian personalities in films. In a recent episode of the Smartless podcast, Driver talked about how his roles as the titular characters in House of Gucci and the aforementioned Ferrari had the tabloids believing he has a preference for playing Italian characters.

He said that more than the roles he played, he wanted to do those films because of the filmmakers that were associated with these projects. He said:

So many people have been like, ‘How many Italians — ?’ I’m like, it’s just kind of worked out that way, it’s going to come up a lot. But I’m like, you know, it’s Ridley and it’s Michael and they’re in my mind some of the best filmmakers. Who gives a sh*t that it was two Italians back to back? ’m surprised how much it comes up. It’s like, ‘You have a thing,’ and I’m like, ‘It’s two! It’s two Italians!’ It’s just two,”

While he may not be too concerned when playing the roles of two characters from different nationalities, John Leguizamo has expressed his displeasure about this in the past.

In the past, the star was critical of the animated feature as it had nothing in terms of representation of Latins in the film, which he said was jarring since they were 20% of the population. Along with that, the Ice Age star was also against Chris Pratt and Charlie Day voicing the characters of Mario and Luigi, two very Italian characters from the video game series.

Thus, Driver’s comments about his characters coincidentally being Italian and nothing more may be taken by Leguizamo with an upsetting tone.
