Fans of House of the Dragon may have caught a familiar name in the recently released Episode 6 of the second season. Daeron Targaryen, the fourth child of Alicent Hightower, seemingly has a role in the show after all. The figure never appeared in the series as he was initially sent away to Oldtown as a ward. His mention might mean he will soon make his debut.

The conversation between Alicent and her brother, Gwayne Hightower, validated the existence of Daeron, who was missing in the first season. Surprisingly, when the Dowager Queen asked how her son was, he was described in ways that were complete opposite of his siblings.

In an interview with showrunner Ryan Condal last month via Variety, he revealed the actor for the role hasn’t been cast yet.

I’ve said he’s a character in the show, but at this point in the story, he’s in Oldtown where he was warded off as a young child. So we don’t have a point-of-view character in that world yet and there is no dramatic reason to go there.

He also added in the same interview that “he’s not yet a dragon rider, but he’s had a dragon born to him.” This dragon he’s referring to is Tessarion. Meanwhile, it seems that his story isn’t ripe yet for this season. “He will come to the narrative and have a role to play, just as he does in the book — we’re just not there yet in the storytelling,” Condal added.

Daeron living far away from King’s Landing seems to have benefitted him more than his siblings. As Gwayne Hightower remarked, Daeron is “stalwart, clever, [and] kind.” Aegon, Aemond, and Helaena were all reared in the Red Keep, and they are none of those things. It remains to be seen how Daeron will fare once he joins the battle.

What Happened To Daeron Targaryen In The Books

In George R.R. Martin’s book, Fire & Blood, Daeron is also known as Daeron the Daring. Despite so, he was described in the novel as the gentlest among his siblings. During the start of the Dance of the Dragons, he was still living in Oldtown and squiring for Lord Ormund Hightower.

When King’s Landing fell on Rhaenyra Targaryen’s hands, King Aegon went missing, and Aemond was killed during the Battle Above the God’s Eye, Prince Daeron now becomes the greatest threat for the Blacks.

It seems like the new character will have a significant part in challenging Queen Rhaenyra for the Iron Throne. Until his official introduction in the show, fans will have to be content with his name being mentioned from time to time.
