Before the Oscar slap, however, the Grown Ups actor was on a little break from touring. Taking a moment to recharge and refresh, Rock hosted the doomed Oscars 2022.

During his hosting speech, the actor made a joke about Will Smith’s wife Jada Pinkett Smith. What followed next was remembered by the whole world. Sitting on The Joe Rogan Experience, Rogan said to Adam Sandler that the Oscar slap was actually a good thing!

I think that was the best thing that ever happened to him because then (his standup) became wild again. Like his stand-up was like, it became outrageous. It was like the Rock of old.

Although Rogan might be right on his part, the general reception to the Oscar slap was overwhelmingly negative on Will Smith’s part. However, fans couldn’t agree more that Chris Rock’s stand-ups did become more wild again.

It got to- he became… just. [Will Smith] just went to a place that he couldn’t get out of.

Joe Rogan continued,

He’s still there. I mean in everybody’s mind, when you see Will Smith ‘Oh, he slapped Chris Rock’. That’s like immediate. Not I Am Legend, not Muhammad Ali, not insanely good movies. The guy’s an incredible actor and people see him they go, ‘Oh, he slapped Chris Rock. F*ck that guy’

And it is quite true. After the incident, Smith appeared in a film titled Emancipation and despite a stellar storyline, the film purely failed because Will Smith was in it.

The actor recently appeared alongside Martin Lawrence for the 2024 film Bad Boys: Ride or Die and the film found average success at the box office. The film received a rating of 6.7/10 on IMDB and 65% on Rotten Tomatoes and is available to rent on Apple TV+ in the U.S.
