While Oppenheimer has given Hollywood a much needed resuscitation in its history of lows throughout the last couple of years, it seems that Hollywood might have stuck itself in a rut too deep to dig itself out of.  Oppenheimer saw Christopher Nolan truly return to form after the somewhat let down film entitled Tenet and teamed up, once again, with Cillian Murphy from The Dark Knight series.

The film saw Murphy as Julius Oppenheimer who helped to create the atomic bomb that decimated Hiroshima and Nagasaki. It received critical acclaim from critics and earned almost $1 billion globally at the box office. Even better than that, it is said to be a frontrunner for next year’s Academy Awards. However, it seems that Nolan’s latest film is just one bright spot in a sea of woes and financial troubles for Tinsel Town. The over usage of IP and box office bombs are the main factors that have attributed to the decline of Hollywood.

IP Over Usage

Disney Remakes
Disney Remakes

Top studios like Warner Brothers and Disney have made the executive decision to rebrand their intellectual property (IP) and remake and reboot their previous content for further financial profit. In the beginning it seemed to have worked as the Star Wars sequels and the earlier batch of Disney remakes earned their respective studios billions of dollars at the box office. However, it seems that the fad of overusing IP has worn off for many people and fans are growing tired of it.

Some of the latest forthcoming projects are Snow White which is set to be directed by Marc Webb and written by Greta Gerwig and when people caught a whiff of the first promotional material for the film, they were not happy one bit about this. Oppenheimer was based on a true story and wasn’t really based off of another movie which is probably why people saw it in droves.

It was because it was something new that people were not expecting from this year, as fans were getting tired of companies consistently ripping off their previous content. However, it seems that the damage is done with the amount of IP being continuously rebranded.

Other Box Office Bombs

To make matters worse, there have been a number of box office bombs that include The Flash, The Marvels, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny and Blue Beetle. It’s self-evident that superhero fatigue has set in thoroughly, but the fact that other big-name franchise films are bombing as well, is enough cause for alarm for any film analysts.

One could easily blame these mishaps and misfires on streaming, where people are choosing to stay home and stream content for the sake of convenience. However, when very few films are not making the same amount of money that other films were a few years ago, it seems as if Hollywood might be on the verge of a serious decline.

Knowing that these bombs have been masquerading around the industry and that the year is not even over seems to be that audiences are tired of the same franchise formula that has been a staple for so many years. With that being said, it’s going to take a lot more than Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer to save the industry. There is going to need to be a major shake down and shifting of movies and content if studios want to see a resurgence of people in theaters.
