Why James Gunn’s DCU will Fail

Why James Gunn’s DCU will Fail

A lot of DC fans are very excited for James Gunn to reboot the DC Universe beginning with Superman: Legacy and, justifiably, many fans are disappointed that the Snyderverse will not be continuing its run in cinemas.

Many fans have been divided over the reboot of the entire franchise and many have called for the restoration of the Snyderverse. The DCEU began in 2013 with Zach Snyder’s Man of Steel and it–somehow–received a mixed reception from critics. It was later followed by Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice which was absolutely demolished by the critics.

The Snyderverse was off to a rocky start but fans have gotten more passionate about the franchise after Snyder released his version of Justice League and Warner Brothers decided to pull the plug and reboot it with James Gunn’s vision.

They’re coming out too soon

What seems to be the biggest problem with so many other reboots is the fact that so many of them seem to be coming out so soon after the last iteration ends that people don’t have time to try and collect themselves and move on without seeing another version of a franchise gallivanting on the screen.

When fans saw Henry Cavill return as Superman in the 2022 film Black Adam, they were stoked that they might see the hero fight alongside Dwayne Johnson in a possible future film. However, it wasn’t too long after that the news dropped that James Gunn would be rebooting the series and recasting Superman with a différent actor.

Needless to say, people were distraught and it seemed like a serious let down for the character and Cavill himself, as fans were teased of his return but never got it. On top of that, he only got one solo film that never received a proper sequel, thus not letting fans have enough time to heal from those wounds.

It may lose the grittiness of the Snyderverse

When Gunn came out with The Suicide Squad in 2021, not to be confused with 2016’s Suicide Squad, admittedly it received glowing reviews from critics. However, while watching the film, I did notice that it lacked the dark quality that encompassed the traditional Snyderverse and seemed more like a violent Marvel conglomeration that was injected into the DCEU.

Whether you like the original concept of the Snyderverse or not, there is no denying their dark elements and gritty atmosphere that surrounded the franchise from its inception, which is one of the reasons as to why so many fans were drawn towards those movies. They looked like a moving comic-book put to screen and that just goes to show fans that you don’t know what you got until it’s gone.

It will confuse DC fans

What seems to be the most frustrating with DC fans is the fact that these movies in the DCU will confuse fans because it can be hard to see where the line starts and ends because not too long ago, I actually thought that Blue Beetle was part of the DCU but it had just caught the tail-end of the DCEU.

In other news, it seems that Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman might be in the universe or may be recast, which seems even more confusing for fans and throws everything up in the air because it is still unclear who will be in or out of the DCU or if it’s a completely différent iteration.
