Donald Glover is returning to TV with his latest Amazon series Mr. and Mrs. Smith which he co-created with Francesca Sloane. The series is a modern reimagining of the 2005 Doug Liman film of the same name which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Glover and Maya Erskine star as the titular characters in the show.
Both actors played spies in the show and promoted the series heavily. In one of the interviews, they were asked about the most important ingredient of being a spy. Glover and Erskine pointed out a common trend in most action flicks that go against the norm of handling guns and weaponry.
Donald Glover and Maya Erskine Point Out Major Flaw in Most Action Films
Donald Glover and Maya Erskine are currently starring in the Amazon series Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Before the series premiered on February 2, the two stars went on to do extensive promotions of the series where they talked about the making of the series and the influence that the 2005 Brad Pitt film of the same name, had on the series.
In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, the two actors were asked about important things that every actor should know while playing a spy. Glover instantly answered the manner of holding a gun and the correct way of doing it. He and Erskine point out how many actors in big action films go about the wrong way and sacrifice authenticity to look cool on screen. They said,
“Something every actor should know about playing a spy is how to hold a gun. I feel like our gun trainers were very good, because they were, you know, they’ve seen a lot of actors hold guns and were peeved by certain…Yeah, there was a lot of like, everybody always wants to be like that (imitates holding the gun with hands stretched).
They don’t do that, they do this (hands close to the chest). He’s like, why would you do that, like it takes too much time. And also not like wincing with one eye, you need both eyes. He’s like why would you do that [Erskine adds saying, You just wanna go like this (one eye closed) cause you think it looks cool or something]”
The fun banter between the two actors led to a very positive hype for the series. The series received positive reviews from fans who praised the fun tone and performances of both Glover and Erskine.
Donald Glover Praises His Co-star Maya Erskine and Her Range as an Actress
Donald Glover knew what he was getting when he brought Maya Erskine on board for the Amazon series Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Glover was a big fan of Erskine and the actor told Entertainment Weekly that Erskine and him had great chemistry on-set while shooing the series.
Glover went on to praise Erskine’s dynamic range as an actress where she can be incredibly funny in reality and instantly put on a great performance when the camera turns on. He revealed that both of them felt like a married couple due to their characters’ fun and electric dynamic. He said,
“She gets really mad at me because I tell her how funny she is — she’s an incredible actress, but she’s so naturally funny. I think she hates the fact that I just think she’s really funny. Her timing is really good, and we have good chemistry, and I just like being around her.
We made each other laugh a lot and I just love seeing her, I love hearing her takes, I love talking about what she’s going to have for lunch. We became like a married couple on set where it was like we knew what we were going to argue about, we knew what we were going to crack up about.”
Their interviews have also been exciting to watch as both actors seem to be extremely comfortable with each other. Audiences have also praised their chemistry in the series and if the show turns out to be a success, there can be a season 2 as well.
