First-person shooter (FPS) games, such as Call of Duty and Battlefield, are one of the most popular genres in all of gaming, so it’s no surprise that Delta Force, a twenty–five–year–old franchise, is being rebooted. Not the most famous or the most lengthy, the Delta Force series first launched on PC in 1998, with its last entry released in 2009.

As for the developers in charge of the Delta Force reboot, gamers will be reassured with their experience, which includes major titles, albeit mainly with mobile games: Tencent’s TiMi Studio Group. Their portfolio includes hits such as Call of Duty: Mobile and Pokémon Unite, and they’re also working on an upcoming, untitled Monster Hunter game for mobile as well.

What do we know about Delta Force?

A thirty seconds teaser video was released ahead of the full reveal, which will take place at Gamescom on 22nd August. But we did gauge enough from the video to start discussions on Delta Force.

For starters, like many FPS games, we know that Delta Force will have both a single–player story mode and an extensive multiplayer mode. The former will focus on 1993’s Battle of Mogadishu, a US military campaign in Somalia. It’s notable because the actual Delta Force members were deeply involved in this battle.

Meanwhile, multiplayer will feature huge Player vs Player (PvP) battles that will jointly integrate land, sea, and air warfare across large open maps. This is very similar to the Battlefield games, which haven’t been doing well at all in recent years. So Delta Force may be aiming to push Battlefield out of the picture.

What are some of the more fantastical elements of Delta Force?

According to what we know from the teaser video, Delta Force doesn’t appear to be a game grounded in reality, at least when it comes to the multiplayer component. Let’s take the “recon arrows” used from the trailer; while their purpose is obvious from the name, it goes without saying that they were not actually used in the Battle of Mogadishu in 1993.

Speaking of things not used in the Battle of Mogadishu, Delta Force also features a device on the wrist that allows the player to “power up”, also not present in 1993. Or today, for that matter! Additionally, the game also features weapons and vehicles that are not era-appropriate, so it’s more than possible that the multiplayer mode will be played over time. Again, this makes it similar to Battlefield, specifically Battlefield 2042’s Portal Mode.

We’ll know more about Delta Force on 22nd August.
