Johnny Depp has starred in some of the most unconventional roles in his career. He is popularly known for his transformations in every film of his and for giving varied performances every time. Whether it be Edward Scissorhands, Willy Wonka, Ed Wood, or Whitey Bulger, Depp has redefined versatility and commitment with these roles.
One of his most memorable films was the 1998 film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas directed by Terry Gilliam. Most recently at the Red Sea Film Festival, Gilliam expressed his desire to cast Depp for a film where he wants him to play Satan.
Terry Gilliam Wants Johnny Depp to Play Satan in His New Film
Terry Gilliam recently attended the Red Sea Film Festival where his documentaries Lost in La Mancha and He Dreams of Giants, were screened. At the event, he revealed that he is planning to make a film called Carnival at the End of Days and he wants Johnny Depp to play Satan.
Gilliam talked to Variety about his unconventional plot of the film where Satan saves humanity and where Depp comes into all of this. He said,
“This is a simple tale of God wiping out humanity for fuc**ng up his beautiful garden Earth. There’s only one character who’s trying to save humanity and that’s Satan, because without humanity he’s lost his job and he’s an eternal character and so to live without a job is terrible.”
While the majority of fans were fascinated with the idea, some were confused and questioned the casting of Depp and Gilliam’s wild plot of the film. Here’s what some of them had to say on X,
If it ever gets made, we all know what Terry’s work ethic is – chaos and hope something vaguely coherent comes out

Gilliam has always been a divisive filmmaker among audiences due to his unconventional narratives and ideas. It remains to be seen if this wild concept fares well with the audience when it is released on screen.
Johnny Depp Advises Saudi Filmmakers To Not Get Stuck With Hollywood Templates
Johnny Depp recently attended the ongoing Red Sea Film Festival in Saudi Arabia where he had a screening of his recent release Jeanne Du Barry. At the event, he advised Saudi filmmakers to find new and inventive ways to tell stories and not let ‘outdated’ Hollywood templates be the gold standard for inspiration. He told The National,
“What I believe, in regard to the opportunities of the Saudi film industry, is to build facilities and go against the grain of everything that Hollywood is putting out. Because it’s time. Because I think the majority of audiences are really bored [with Hollywood].
It’s a prefabricated template. These three-act structural kind of thing, people are sick of it. I think it shows pretty well in what’s happening in Hollywood today.”
Depp recently completed shooting his second directorial venture, a biopic titled Modi about the life of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. The titular role will be played by Riccardo Scamarcio with Al Pacino in a supporting role.
