While musicals have struggled to get their footing back post-Covid, with acclaimed gems In the Heights and West Side Story becoming box-office bombs, Wonka has finally broken the cycle. Starring Timothée Chalamet as the young Willy Wonka in the whimsical origin story, the Dune Star had some big boots to fill to live up to the previous depictions, and he didn’t disappoint.

But apart from being a critical hit, which is rarer for prequels and sequels released decades after the original in order to recapture its magic, Wonka has also hit a home run at the box office.

Paul King and Timothée Chalamet’s Bold Move Pays off as Wonka Exceeds Expectations

Directed by Paul King, creator of Paddington and Paddington 2, one of the best sequels ever made, Wonka overcame the odds and actually lived up to the standards set by its predecessors. While expanding the backstory of one of modern literature’s most famous characters was a bold move, thanks to King’s direction, accompanied by Chalamet’s charm, it transcended fans’ expectations.

And deservingly, the prequel has become Timothee Chalamet’s fourth biggest hit after opening to a $39M U.S. Debut, making a collection of $151.4M Globally, surpassing his best film Lady Bird.

With the film earning the top spot at the weekend’s box office, dethroning Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Extolled Domestic Distribution Boss Jeff Goldstein credited the marketing for its success.

“Warner Bros. Motion Picture Chairs Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca supported this movie with the extraordinary marketing from President Josh Goldstine and his team in a way that will delight audiences through the long Christmas holiday.”

With the pace the film is maintaining, it’s reasonable to assume it will surpass Little Women for the third spot in his filmography, whose top-grossing films involve Little Women, Dune, and Interstellar.

A Possible Wonka 2 Isn’t off the Cards

With Wonka hitting the sweet spot at the box office, a discussion about a potential sequel to the prequel is bound to happen. And on reflecting on its possibility, Timothée Chalamet didn’t shut down the discussion, stating that if there’s a story to tell, Wonka 2 will happen. But although he admitted that there is one, the Dune Star is unsure what the story involves. He told ET:

“If there was a story to be told. And evidently there is… Something twisted happens … I don’t know how we started like this and end there — I don’t know what the story is.”
