The animated series X-Men ‘97 picks up from where X-Men: The Animated Series ended back in 1996. The original show ended with Professor X leaving for the Shi’ar homeworld along with Lilandra, with Magento taking over the Institute as per the Professor’s will. The series also shows that Jean Grey is pregnant with the child of Scott Summers a.k.a Cyclops.

The child is born in the second episode of the show, with Rogue having to deliver the child after absorbing the knowledge of an obstetrician as Jean goes into labor.  The couple named the child Nathan Summers, leading fans to quickly realize that the child will go on to become Cable in the future. However, in the comics, Nathan is the son of Scott Summers and Madelyn Pryor, the clone of Jean Grey.

The end of episode two shows the arrival of a Jean look-alike. The recently aired episode 3, titled ‘Fire Made Flesh’, reveals that the look-alike is the real Jean Grey and that the mother of Nathan Summers is a clone. The clone Jean then has an identity crisis and transforms herself into the Goblin Queen after being manipulated by Mister Sinister.

She takes off with Nathan Summers, with the child being infected with a virus by Mister Sinister. The original Jean communicates with the Goblin Queen telepathically to snap her out of Mister Sinister’s control. Nathan is saved but the virus is still in his body, leading the X-Men to send him to the future for a cure. The Goblin Queen takes the name of Madelyn Prior at the end.

When Jean Grey was revealed to be pregnant with the child of Scott Summers a.k.a Cyclops, fans speculated that it would be either Rachel Summers or Nathan Summers. It was revealed that the child was the latter, confirming the existence of Cable. In th comics, Nathan Summers becomes Cable in the future.

The son of Madelyn Pryor a.k.a clone Jean and Cyclops, Cable’s powers are initiated by Mister Sinister as he instilled a virus in him to battle Apocalypse. According to the character’s wiki, Nathan Summers becomes a trained warrior in the future, assuming the role of Askani’son. In Ryan Reynolds’ Deadpool 2, he was depicted by Josh Brolin.

Cable is known to be an alpha-level mutant and has telepathic powers. He is a skilled telepath just like his mother and also has the ability to mind trap, telekinetic powers, and create illusions. Cable also possesses the ability to time travel and has traveled to his original past multiple times.
