X-Men: First Class director, Matthew Vaughn gave an insight on the superhero genre at New York Comic Con. Talking about the challenges one had to face while working in that genre, he added how he made his movie quite grounded.

He told Screenrant

“When you’re making a superhero movie, you sort of have to work harder because you’ve got to make people believe it. That’s why X-Men First Class was pretty grounded. We set it in the Cuban Missile Crisis; they had relatable human problems.”

He continued sharing that the movie was not dependent on CGI which is quite a major issue the superhero genre often gets stuck with.

“And it wasn’t relying on the CG. I think CG’s f–ked up everything as well, because you feel like you’re watching a video game. You’re not with the characters.”

He also praised the MCU for creating characters like Groot and Rocket from Guardians of the Galaxy.

“Apart from Guardians, I still think Groot and the raccoon are f–king pieces of genius, that I feel so much for them. So I’ll be intrigued.”

He has high hopes for DC due to the new co-CEOs, James Gunn and Peter Safran, and believes the same for Marvel Studios President, Kevin Feige

“I think at least DC is under; I think James Gunn and Saffron[Peter Safran] they’ve got a good chance of popping, and hopefully, Feige will go back to less is more and make less films and concentrate on making them great.”

The director only hopes for quality content to be delivered to fans instead of the quantity which would often deteriorate the essence of the superhero genre. CGI has always been a crucial element in the superhero genre however excessive usage has led to a drastic decline in the quality of content Marvel was previously delivering.

Avengers: Endgame was the movie that exceeded everyone’s expectations giving a massive rollercoaster ride throughout the film but the era after that seems to be less impressive to fans.

After the immense success of the 2019 movie, MCU brought new movies for the franchise to unravel and explore which would contribute to building a new future. With the arrival of Eternals and Thor: Love and Thunder, many fans couldn’t help but criticize Phase 4’s content and the visual effects they are often presenting.

While CGI is an important element to enhance our storytelling given that the superhero genre is incomplete without it, Marvel often ends up displaying it to captivate the audience, which sometimes makes it dull. Marvel’s VFX artists have often complained about the working conditions with which they had to complete the projects leading to further problems.

While the franchise loves to go grand with its visuals, it often forgets to make it soothing. Overall, Marvel’s creativity with CGI is quite an issue that can surely be resolved since they have a capable professional talent to develop appropriate measures.
