The massive hype train for Deadpool & Wolverine has brought the mutants of legacy movies back to everyone’s lips. After officially introducing the X-Gened characters, fans have been recalling their favorite moments from the IP. And one brings them back to the earliest memories of Storm in the 2000 movie X-Men.
However, what was supposed to be a badass display of power by the electrifying goddess ended up being a cringey sequence with poor dialogue. And in doing so it became a forgettable glint.
Marvel’s legacy of iconic one-liners
No media is complete without a hook, and these one-liners often complete the viewing experience. Superhero franchises are full of them, with every superhero or villain having their own iconic line. Ranging from “Hulk Smash!” to Captain America’s “Avengers Assemble!”, fans get goosebumps every time these lines are thrown on-screen.
However, Tony Stark’s “I am Iron Man” perhaps remains the MCU’s most inspiring as well as devastating one-liners of all time. The emotional impact and the heartbreak of not seeing the character again was crushing for Marvel fans.
The words uttered by Tony Stark might hold less meaning now, since he will be donning an entirely different suit in the MCU. One that might make some fans happy, while others who like to stick to comic books, not so much.
What Storm’s power move could have been…
While the MCU does have some powerful one-liners, the legacy films are no less. Looking back at Fox’s X-Men (2000), the film took a slightly different approach to our favorite mutant team.
The Bryan Singer-directed film had several flashy moments that are still fresh in the memory of fans. But one particular scene with Storm fell flat, only because of its cringey one-liner, as fans recalled:
The scene in question is the time when Storm is ambushed by Toad in the first X-Men movie. She pushes him back with high-speed winds, asking him in a smug tone:
Do you know what happens to a Toad when it’s struck by lightning? Same thing that happens to everything else.
And then she proceeds to literally barbeque the long-tongued mutant with her lightning bolts. As you can see, it is not exactly a remarkable piece of dialogue, and completely ruins the high-powered aesthetic of the scene.
