When news first trickled in about James Gunn helming a new Superman film, the DC fandom was ubiquitously against it. It didn’t help that Henry Cavill – for whom they’d been waiting to once again don the fabled superhero gear for years now – was abruptly sundered from the project. So, one can only imagine the wrath of the nerds and devotees.
Not to mention, the superhero franchise, which had undergone a major shakedown at the time, had already been teetering precariously on the edge of polarizing views. But you know what they say, every cloud has a silver lining.
Watchmen & The Batman Editor Joins James Gunn’s Superman
After all the flack that James Gunn‘s forthcoming superhero venture has been attracting, the film just did a full 180° turn, sweeping fans off their feet and planting a seed of hope within them. And it’s all thanks to William Hoy, the genius editor who singlehandedly seems to have restored the faith of innumerable DC buffs after stepping aboard Gunn’s Superman (via DC Film News on X).
Hoy, 68, is a writer and editor who’s worked on some of the biggest Hollywood supernovas, including the likes of Zack Snyder‘s Watchmen and Matt Reeves‘ The Batman as well as War of the Planet of the Apes. And seeing such a formidable talent joining the David Corenswet-led project, fans are absolutely stoked, to say the least.

The first time that photos of Corenswet in the heroic red and blue attire bubbled up on social media, people found themselves divided as some expressed excitement while others lambasted the studio’s co-CEO’s vision. But if there’s one thing about which the fanbase stands united, it’s that Hoy’s craft and contribution to the film will be its biggest redeeming qualities.
Why DC Fans Are Excited (And You Should Be Too)
An award-winning editor, Hoy has more than two dozen feature-film editing credits under his belt and let’s not forget how both of Reeves’ films – on which he served as an editor – were hailed especially for their ravishing cinematography.
Led by Robert Pattinson, The Batman was a soaring commercial success that was lauded by critics and fans alike for its spectacularly noir feel and unforgettable visual effects. And while Snyder’s Watchmen didn’t fare well at the box office, it played a monumental role in shaping pop culture and a deluge of DC movies to come.
And let’s not forget that Reeves’ War of the Planet of the Apes has a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Not only was the 2017 sci-fi action flick commended for its intricate storyline and riveting direction, but it was also praised for its stunning, lifelike visual effects and the overall vision of the movie in which Hoy played an essential role along with Reeves (via AwardsDaily).
So, rest assured, Gunn’s upcoming Superman is going to be a certified hit.
