Johnny Depp has been facing a career slump ever since his legal troubles with ex-wife Amber Heard. The actor lost out on multiple roles, including Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and others. The biggest blow to his career came with the Pirates franchise choosing to distance itself.
Jerry Bruckheimer, producer of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise confirmed that the franchise would be rebooted to give it the freedom to not wait for multiple actors (via Variety). While he did not rule out the possibility of Depp’s return in a cameo, Life & Style magazine reported that Austin Butler had been tapped to play the lead. According to an insider,
There’s still no script, and Austin doesn’t sign up for a movie without seeing what the story is going to be, but unlike Margot and Johnny, you can easily imagine making three movies with Austin because he’s young, fit and isn’t heavily tied to another franchise at a rival studio the way Margot is.
Bruckheimer also mentioned to Variety that the team had developed an amazing third act in the script and that the first two needed to be refined.
