However, for many, he will always be the iconic Thomas Shelby. Murphy breathed life into the character and it was possible due to his immense talent and hard work. There was a time when the creators were afraid that Murphy was too skinny for the role of the gangster, but he chose to build his physique, even at the cost of eating non-veg after more than a decade.

Prior to taking on the role of Thomas Shelby, Cillian Murphy had been a vegetarian for a staggering 12 years. However, for “Peaky Blinders,” he reintroduced meat into his diet. This decision wasn’t driven by personal preference, but rather by a desire to physically transform and better portray the character. In an interview on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Murphy talked about eating meat after so long.

“I was vegetarian for like 12 years.” “What happened, Bacon Sandwich?”, Asked Ferguson, to which Murphy replied, “No, It wasn’t the Bacon Sandwich, it was, I went like Venison”. Venison? You Flash Bas****d” replied Ferguson. “I know and I felt amazing afterwards, It was so good” – replied Murphy.

Ferguson was shocked to the fact that Murphy broke his fast for a Bambi and he replied “You ate Bambi? For twelve years you didn’t eat meat and then you ate Bambi?” Murphy had talked about this experience in another interview with Mr Porter.

“A few cocktails had been had before dinner. When the waiter asked if I’d like the fish or the venison, I hesitated and he said, ‘Have the venison.’ He was right. It was extraordinary. They reared their own deer on the property.” – Cillian Murphy to Mr Porter
