Celine Dion had to endure the heartbreaking pain when her husband and her brother just died two days apart. It was a devastating and darkest time for the singer and her family. She was tormented and mourning the grief took her to a place where she was inconsolable. For Dion, it was almost impossible to come back to continue her career as she lost a part of her soul.

Dion’s husband, René Angélil was a music producer, talent manager, and singer. Angélil died on 14 January 2016 at the age of 73 after battling with throat cancer. “Losing my husband, for my kids to lose their father, it was quite something,” she said on the Today Show. “You cannot stop living. Go forward,” the singer added.

Dion and Angélil were married for nearly twenty-two years. She shares three sons with her late husband- René-Charles, Nelson, and Eddy. Before his death, Dion put a hold on her career to concentrate fully on her husband, taking good care of him in his time of need. “I want to devote every ounce of my strength and energy to my husband’s healing,” she said at the time. Upon Angélil’s passing the singer lost her morale and it took a lot to recover.

Dion grieved for quite a while but the world was in need of her voice. The My Heart Will Go On fame singer was called upon by Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds. Her fellow Canadian Reynolds reached out to her by sending a letter requesting the singer to write and sing for the Deadpool 2 soundtrack. Reynolds wanted a fresh perspective that could magically uplift the tone of the film. Despite the movie’s thematic darkness and violent plotline, the actor wanted Dion in the project as he considered the singer the goddess of music.

“Of course, the studio piles up a whole bunch of sort of millennial, friendly type singers that are all incredibly talented, but we just thought, ‘Let’s go right to the legend. Let’s see if we can get her.’ So we got a way in through her manager. I sent her a long letter describing what Deadpool is and what we’re hoping to do, and somehow she got… two hours later or something, she said yes. And then we said, ‘How about a video?’ and she said yes to that, too!” Reynolds said.

Perhaps, the Deadpool actor’s letter was inspiring. After nearly two years, Reynolds received a resounding yes from the singer. Reynolds’ team was pretty excited about it and asked the singer to appear in a music video, and she did.

“We’ve all gone through stuff and in order to keep going we have to look inside ourselves and find the courage to move forward,” Dion told Forbes. Dion released her 2019 album Courage after Reynolds’ inspiring letters. The singer, however, did not disclose the contents of the letter but it did help Dion to get back on her feet after her tormenting period of grief.
