Being a celebrity can come with a lot of positives and negatives. While many build a legacy that nothing can bring down, there are darker sides to being in the public eye, like the constant interest that the world has in one’s personal life. Many of Hollywood’s finest have become victims of inappropriate questions and speculations simply because the public is curious about something.
One aspect that people often have that has made numerous celebrities uncomfortable are questions about their sexuality. During an interview, Hugh Jackman was questioned about the gender that he was interested in, and his answer could not be more perfect.
Hugh Jackman Responded To Gay Rumors
Many years before the release of the beloved Deadpool & Wolverine, whispers were floating around that questioned Hugh Jackman’s sexuality. Many fans were curious about the gender that he was attracted to, and the speculation caused such a great stir that the actor was directly asked about this during an interview (via Elliewilliuhms on X).
You can’t be a star without having a gay rumor out there, can you? Let’s face it. You know how I feel about it. I think that it’s not that interesting a conversation.
He started by joking that one cannot call themselves a successful Hollywood star if they do not have people questioning their sexuality. He then talked about the subject more seriously, stating that he had very evident feelings surrounding the matter and did not think that the answer to the question would change much.
I don’t think it’s as big a deal as everyone makes it up. No one’s sitting here, asking me, ‘Are you someone who wants to live in the country or the city.’ But it’s kind of like to me, a similar question. Do you like blondes or brunettes? Do you like reading autobiographies or do you like reading fiction?
He stated that it was no different than asking someone about the region they like to live in or the kind of books they like to read. According to Jackman, the world getting a clear answer about his sexuality would not make any difference in how they view him.
Yeah, on a certain level, it tells you something about the person. But it doesn’t define who they are. And if it does. I don’t care what your sexuality is, if it defines you, then we’re not going to have a lot to talk about.
He added that if someone was gay, that would only be a part of what makes them who they are. It would seem that Jackman does not believe in reducing someone to their sexuality and actively practices against it.
A Bigger Problem?
While there is nothing wrong with asking about the sexuality of a close friend, several lines are crossed when audiences demand a star to reveal their interests for the entire world to judge. Unfortunately, Hugh Jackman wasn’t the only one who has had to deal with such questioning, as two other actors have experienced the same.
In 2018, Tom Hardy was bluntly asked about his sexuality during an interview with Marie Claire (via RadarOnline). After an older interview resurfaced of him talking about having to be involved with men for specific roles, the actor clarified what he meant by this.
I have never put my p**is in a man. I’ve never had a c**k in my a**e, and I have no f**king desire for it. If that’s what you like, cool. But it doesn’t do it for me,
Rather than be secretive or indirect about it, he bluntly stated that he was not homosexual and did not understand why there was so much discussion around it.
Tom Cruise has experienced something similar when it comes to his sexuality, with many wondering and speculating if he is heterosexual or not. It is safe to say that many stars think that such a line of questioning is unnecessarily invasive and can lead to their words being twisted.
