Everyone is well aware of Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, which is set in the modern Western time period. It combines family drama, political intrigue, and stunning landscapes, making it a must-watch. The series is now finally set to conclude with Part 2 of Season 5.
Season 5, which has been on hiatus since January 2023, will be the show’s final season. There’s one more Sheridan-helmed side project that’s been delayed for years, but is finally happening— the long-awaited 6666.
The premise of the show takes place on the historic Four Sixes Ranch in Guthrie, Texas. It focuses on the lives of tough cowboys from a Texan perspective.
Taylor Sheridan’s Iconic Yellowstone Character Faces Uncertain Future
With Yellowstone ending in November 2024, it seems like 6666 might go solo for a while or team up with the sequel series 2024—which will come out after the series ends.
It’s good news that the Yellowstone franchise will expand beyond one series. However, due to this spin-off, a fan favorite character might not return. It is none other than Jimmy Hurdstrom, who feels like a regular guy with his own dreams and issues beyond the ranch.
In Season 4 of Yellowstone, Jimmy (Jefferson White), got kicked out of the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch. He broke John Dutton’s (Kevin Costner) trust by not keeping his word about staying on the rodeo circuit.
So, Jimmy was sent to Texas where he joined the Four Sixes Ranch. There, he learned how to be a real cowboy and gained a new appreciation for what he had.
At the ranch, Jimmy fell in love with Emily and they got engaged. This was the kind of progress Jimmy needed after all this time, and it gave him more opportunities for his character.
In the Season 4 finale Grass on the Streets and Weeds on the Rooftops, when Jimmy came back to Yellowstone, it surprised a lot of people when he asked John Dutton if he could stay at the Four Sixes permanently.
John agreed because he saw the positive changes in Jimmy and his love for Emily. So, Jimmy was essentially written out of the show. He didn’t show up in the first half of Season 5 except for the last episode, A Knife and No Coin, where it was revealed that he and Emily are happily married.
Actor Jefferson White wasn’t sure what to say when asked if he was permanently leaving Yellowstone for 6666. White told Looper:
“It’s really wherever things take me. Similar to real life, you don’t get many choices. For Jimmy, he doesn’t get a lot of choices. He was plucked, picked up, and tossed to the Yellowstone ranch… And I really think it’s appropriate, then, that I, myself, don’t make a lot of choices.”
White’s words hint that he’s not sure if Jimmy will come back to Yellowstone. But whether Jimmy returns or not might entirely depend on the storyline.
When is Taylor Sheridan’s Spin-off Series of Yellowstone Releasing?
Taylor Sheridan has his hands full with projects beyond just Yellowstone, including Mayor of Kingstown, Tulsa King, and Special Ops: Lioness.
Besides 6666, Sheridan is also in charge of running the season 2 of 1923, and likely the upcoming 2024 series. He’s also involved in other Dutton-related projects like 1944 and Lawman: Bass Reeves.
The cowboy-turned-filmmaker stated that 6666 is currently on hold as he figures out the best way to move forward with the series. He told The Hollywood Reporter:
“[The Four Sixes spin-off], for a number of reasons, needs a unique level of special care because this is a real place with real families working here. You have to respect the lineage. I’ve told [the Paramount Network] to be patient.”
Currently, 6666 doesn’t have a specific release date. TV Guide reported that Sheridan confirmed production was paused in summer 2023.
This pause was expected due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. But, viewers can still hope that the series might debut in 2024.
