While the actor has starred with many prominent actors in his films, he seemed to have forgotten that he co-starred with actor Dennis Quaid. On a press tour for his animated film Strange World, Gyllenhaal was shocked to find out that the duo had played father-son before on the film The Day After Tomorrow, which was released almost eighteen years before the interview.

Actor Jake Gyllenhaal played the role of Sam Hall in the disaster film The Day After Tomorrow, which was directed by Roland Emmerich. In the film, Gyllenhaal plays the son of Dennis Quaid, who warns the world that climate change could cause another ice age. The film follows the survival of the father-son duo as the world freezes over and they are stuck on different sides of the country.

Though Jake Gyllenhaal and Dennis Quaid play father and son, the duo barely share two scenes in the survival drama. Coupled with the fact that the film was released over twenty years ago, the actor naturally forgot that he and the Far From Heaven star were playing family in the Roland Emmerich thriller.

Gyllenhaal was extremely shocked when the fact was presented to him while the two were promoting the animated film Strange World. Gyllenhaal and Quaid played father and son again in the film and they attended the press tour for the film together.

When Gyllenhaal was asked about his experience of working with Quaid again, the Nightcrawler star seemed to be shocked. He said to Yahoo! Entertainment,

“We did? Oh…Oh, oh! Whoah! That’s the guy who played my dad…Wow, that’s cool. You know we’ve been doing a lot of interviews and you just blew my mind.”

The actors also reportedly recorded their parts in the animated film separately, so their interaction was even more limited than their collaboration on The Day After Tomorrow.

Was Jake Gyllenhaal Messing With The Interviewer?

While Jake Gyllenhaal seemed to be genuinely shocked by the interviewer’s revelation that Dennis Quaid played his father in The Day After Tomorrow, many fans said that Gyllenhaal was messing with the interviewer. The film was released in 2004 and the duo barely had any scenes together as the characters were stuck in other sides of the country in a modern ice age.

The long time gap, limited scenes, and the number of films that Gyllenhaal has worked on since then can be a suitable justification for the Brokeback Mountain star to have forgotten the fact. However, the actor is known to have a reputation for finding his own thrills during long and grueling interviews.

The actor had previously had his fun in a press junket for his film Velvet Buzzsaw. While the cast and crew were promoting their film at the Sundance Festival, director Dan Gilroy seemed to mispronounce the word ‘melancholy’. Jake Gyllenhaal immediately corrected the director on his pronunciation and jokingly added, “Not the first time today.”

Jake Gyllenhaal and Dan Gilroy later clarified that they were not feuding during the interview, but that the mispronunciation was an inside joke and a reference to Megamind.

The Day After Tomorrow is streaming on FuboTV.
