Cillian Murphy worked with Luc Besson in 2019’s action thriller Anna which didn’t turn out to be a very profitable venture. It also failed to leave a mark critically after receiving highly mixed reviews. But soon after the Lucy director found himself embroiled in huge controversy, Murphy was also questioned about his association with him.

According to Cillian Murphy, he didn’t know any information about the allegations during the filming of the movie- “The first I heard of it was a year after we had finished.” He agreed that it makes him very sad and shocked when these revelations come out. But he also made sure that anyone in this situation deserves full support.

“You go into a project with all the best intentions and then that stuff comes out and you’re shocked and saddened, and you just have to let it play out and be fully supportive of women and anyone who is in that situation.”

Although the director denied all the allegations, the interview with The Guardian was not the first time, that the Oppenheimer lead took a stand for women. Cillian Murphy also raised headlines after being spotted in a march regarding abortion laws in Ireland.

It was in 2016 when the Inception actor was spotted in a march in Dublin organized to demand a change in the strict abortion laws of Ireland. As the crowd called for safe and legal abortion in the country, Murphy also showed his support by taking part in the rally. Cillian Murphy also took to an online media platform to keep his views on the issue where stated.

“I feel also as a man we need as a society to atone for how women were treated in this country for a long, long time. They were ashamed and we put their safety at risk and I think we need to address that, to be brave and stand up. If women don’t have the right to determine decisions about their own body, then they can’t have equal rights. It’s as simple as that.”

Fortunately, in 2018, a decision was passed that according to many Irish women will always be a historical moment for them.
