Costner joined the cast of Taylor Sheridan’s neo-Western Yellowstone in the first season as Dutton, the patriarch of the Yellowstone Ranch. The series has developed a loyal fanbase and Costner even won the Golden Globe for Best Actor for his role in the show. While Costner is regularly known for playing good-guy characters in his films, Yellowstone made him quite ruthless in his dealings. However, this change reportedly did not sit well with his father initially. Talking about his late father and how he took an interest in his career, Kevin Costner told Parade that he was persuaded against taking the job,

My dad, who passed away this year, and my mom, too, within months of each other, took a big interest in my career. He said, ‘You’re going to lose your audience, fellow. That is a naughty show.’ He said, ‘They’re going to drift away, son.’ He said, ‘You mark my words, that’s naughty.’ I just had to look at my dad, ‘Oh, my God.’

However, the actor did not heed his father’s advice and went ahead with the show. Costner has since gained a new set of audiences and fans who were introduced to him.

Kevin Costner’s Yellowstone sees multiple conflicts arise as the actor as John Dutton deals with his ranch being eyed by developers. The show also sees inner conflicts between family members and a lot of deception and violence. Costner himself has acted as an executioner in many instances in the show.

While these reasons initially caused worry to his father, the actor mentioned that he finally came around to the show after people around him began asking him questions about the show. He said to Parade,

Then two years later, he’s going, ‘The nurses want to know how it ends. They just love it.’ He just forgot about that other prediction.

Kevin Costner also mentioned that he was constantly being asked about how he would be managing his daughter Beth, played by Kelly Reilly. Beth is known for being overprotective of her father as well as being extremely unstable and ruthless. The actor mentioned even his father had asked him how he would be handling the character in the show.

Probably the biggest question I get is: What are you going to do with Beth? I said, ‘What?’ ‘Your daughter!’ I said, ‘I don’t know what I’m going to do with her.’ As if they feel like I can do something about her. I think that’s the thing I get approached most on is who is going to manage her.

While it is unclear if the Horizon star would return to Taylor Sheridan’s show after all the feud, the actor had recently mentioned that he would return if the script was good.

Yellowstone is currently streaming on Paramount.
