Brock Lesnar Inspired Hajime Isayama For The Design of One of Its Titans

Earning its position as one of the best anime series of the new generation, Hajime Isayama’s Attack on Titan has often been included in the conversation of one of the best series to be ever created by humankind. While popular series such as Naruto, Bleach, and Death Note bends to one genre, AOT does not follow the traditional rules. The story is set in a dystopian world, where humanity resides inside massive walls to protect themselves from monsters called Titans.

The series features Eren Yeager, who learns that he possesses the ability to turn into a Titan, making him a target for the government as well as the Titans. In the narrative, Hajime Isayama used the Titans as a central enigma and the driving force for the progress of the plot. The series featured Kokonotsu no Kyojin or The Nine Titans, where Reiner Braun’s Armored Titan was a fan favorite and played an integral part in the progress of the story.

During an exclusive interview with Gong Kautogi, translated in English by the Tumblr users suniuz and fuku-shuu, Isayama mentioned how he was always smaller in stature in comparison with boys of his age and he “was always about 10 kg lighter than other boys of his age.” The artist mentioned how the fights were heavily inspired by MMA and WWE.

Moreover, he always looked up to real fighters as his primary source of inspiration; such was the case with Reiner Braun’s Armored Titan, which was inspired by none other than Brock Lesnar. This inspiration transitioned The Beast into a fictional monstrous version of himself featuring an exaggerated physical appearance and enhanced fighting style.

Needless to say, Brock Lesnar was indeed the blueprint for the Armored Titan as the character featured exceptionally tough armor that could not be penetrated by the blades of the ODM gear used by the Eldians of Paradis. Moreover, it could even withstand bullets and cannon fire, which could only be penetrated by using anti-Titan artillery. It is indeed a great way of showcasing admiration for one of the most decorated fighting machines in the professional world.

“It would have been nice if I could have changed the ending. Writing manga is supposed to be freeing. But if I was completely free, then I should have been able to change the ending. I could have changed it and said I wanted to go in a different direction. But the fact is that I was tied down to what I had originally envisioned when I was young.”

Though the ending of the series is Hajime Isayama’s biggest regret, it is one of the greatest finales ever because none of the fans could predict how the show would have ended, making it absolutely unpredictable.

Attack on Titan can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
