Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy is celebrating its 25th birthday, with the first part being released in 1999. Since then, the film has become part of a series, with the release of The Mummy Returns and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor. Three movies were not enough for some fans, however, as many have been begging for more additions to the story, even though the last part was released more than ten years ago.

It would seem that their prayers have been heard, as the director of the first two films and the producer of the third, Stephen Sommers, revealed his thoughts on coming back for another movie.

Interestingly enough, the director is completely open to the idea. He does have one condition though.

Brendan Fraser’s The Mummy Could Come Back Under One Condition

Stephen Sommers gave an interview with SYFY WIRE, where he talked about The Mummy film series. Even though he has worked on many projects since the series reached its conclusion, it would seem that he still has more stories to tell about Brendan Fraser’s Rick O’Connell. The director revealed that he was interested in making another movie in the series, despite the last film having come out in 2008.

However, he does have one condition for his return; he wants the movie to be placed in Egypt in some way or another.

“To me, it has to be [in Egypt],” He went on, “That’s why with the sequel … the beginning starts off in Ancient Egypt, and then we go to London for the whole first act. And it’s very adventurous. [I thought] London at night and all this stuff could be very adventurous and fun, but we have to get back to Egypt. Like Tarzan movies, you want him to be in the jungle.”

Elaborating on his wish, the filmmaker revealed that he has had a vision for an Egyptian backdrop ever since he was making the second movie. Though he was able to sneak a bit of it, with a few opening scenes being placed in the country, he wishes to make an entire movie centered on their culture and history.

Stephen Sommers is Flexible When it Comes to his Condition

While this is a very big motivator for Stephen Sommers to come back for another Mummy movie, he is not hellbent on the idea. Speaking on how much of the movie would be placed in Egypt, he revealed that he did not care, as long as he got to film a decent chunk of it in the country.

“It doesn’t have to all be in Egypt.” He went on,  “That’s just my personal opinion, but that’s the thing. I just love adventure movies. So yes, if I get a third Mummy movie [to direct], you’d have to have it in [Egypt]. I don’t know what percent, I’d have to think about it, but yeah, it has that feel.”

He added that since he is a big fan of adventure movies and all the best franchises in the genre have at some point had a story set in the country, he would want the hypothetical film to follow suit. It is safe to say that fans of action and adventure would adore such an approach for the cult-classic series.

The Mummy is available for streaming on Netflix.
