“I once stood with Keanu Reeves before Diego Velazquez’s 1632 painting “Christ Crucified” in Madrid’s Prado museum. As we discussed the harrowing power of the painting, an old Spanish woman approached with a Bible and pen, holding them out to Keanu. Taken aback, he said, “You want me to sign that?”, The old woman said nothing, so Keanu reluctantly signed The Bible, and the old woman shuffled away. “How many times have you been asked to sign a Bible?” I asked. “First time,” he said. I looked up at Christ Crucified, then back at Keanu (who’s Neo is one of the great Christ figures in film history), and I thought to myself, “He is The One.”

In a candid interview with The Riverfront Times, Keanu Reeves opened up about the challenges he endured while working in Scott Derrickson-directed film The Day the Earth Stood Still, saying,

“I think in terms of the challenges of this film probably would go mostly to the director, Scott Derrickson. He had to kind of direct this ship. He had decided to make a remake of an American classic. And he took that on, and he had a real strong point of view. He, as a person and as a director, was very practical, very open, very collaborative.”

He continued,

“So, he kind of set the tone for everyone in terms of being able to do their best and to have a real kind of positive experience. I think probably, as we all kind of sweated our roles, Scott Derrickson probably was the one who was in a cold sweat at night. “How do I do this film?” He really showed up and created a great place for all of us to do the best that we can. It doesn’t always go like that, so it was kind of cool that it did.”

Keanu Reeves is a dedicated star who has starred in fascinating films like The Matrix, John Wick, Speed, and Constantine.
