Josh Brolin is returning as Gurney Halleck in next year’s Dune: Part Two. The Denis Villeneuve-directed film will see actors like Florence Pugh, Léa Seydoux, and Austin Butler joining the franchise with the second installment. Brolin recently sat down with Butler and interviewed each other about their life and career (on Interview Magazine).

The duo talked about the experience of shooting the sequel and the kind of people they like to be with. Brolin also talked about how he got close to Butler and the deep conversations they had, developing mutual respect for each other in the process. He said,

“I’ve been lucky enough to experience fairly kind people, but I’ve also seen the other side, which I don’t particularly take too well. So anyway, that went on for a couple of weeks, and then finally, we were in Budapest, and your trailer was right next to mine, and I just walked over there. I had gotten nervous at that point, you had been talked up so much.

Yeah. And then I walked in, and you were bald and extremely pasty. So I had to get over that. And it got conversationally intimate almost immediately, which I appreciated. You offered up pieces of yourself to see what I’d do with them until there was a fairly quick understanding that we were amongst trustworthy friends”

It seems like the two actors have gotten very comfortable and have become friends in real life. The fact that their trailers were next to each other led them to bond and know each other better. It will be interesting to see whether they have a scene with each other in the film.

Josh Brolin’s Gurney Halleck impressed fans with his charismatic portrayal in the first Dune. Although his character was thought to have died in it, the trailer of the sequel has shown that he will return with a more grizzly look indicating that some time has passed between the two films.

Fans of the Frank Herbert books did not get to see the character’s musical side with Brolin’s portrayal. Now, in an interview with Empire Magazine, director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed that the second film will explore that side of the character and Brolin was game to do it. Villeneuve said,

“The Gurney song survived Part Two! It became a weird priority for me. But Josh Brolin is a poet and we played it together. It was awesome.”

Dune: Part Two is scheduled to hit theatres on March 1, 2024. Villeneuve has also recently confirmed that the script for the third film is almost done. It is safe to say that the future of the franchise looks really exciting and promising.
