Young Justice, ever since it first started airing on television, was hailed for its expansive worldbuilding, and for the inclusion of diverse stories across a range of characters that pulled from every aspect of the DC Universe. Continuing that tradition, it seems that Young Justice has added yet another corner of the universe into its canon, one that belongs to a shortlived CG series, belonging to one of DC’s most powerful heroes.
Green Lantern: The Animated Series was a CG animated TV series, lauded as Bruce Timm’s return to television after Justice League Unlimited. The show was unfortunately canceled due to bad toy sales, just like Young Justice. The show was also canceled for failing to capitalize on the Green Lantern film, which flopped horribly in theatres and was panned by critics and audiences alike.
Young Justice brought back key characters from Green Lantern: The Animated Series
Razer, who was first introduced in the animated Green Lantern series, The character was created specifically for the show, which was wide and expansive in its own way. It explored a myriad of lantern corps (such as the Red Lanterns, led by Atrocitus, the single Orange Lantern fueled by Greed, and the Blue Lanterns, who are powered by hope).
Razer went on to make an appearance in the 92nd episode of Young Justice, in an episode aptly titled “Encounter Upon the Razer’s Edge“. The plot of the episode followed a peace summit between the New Gods, The Green Lantern, and the Justice League.
Razer appears with two rings, being a hybrid member of the Blue Lantern Corp and the Red Lantern Corp. As for his appearance in the show, it seems that the character has given up the search for Aya, the Green Lantern AI that was a part of the crew that was led by Hal Jordan (involving Kilowog and Razer as well).
Razer’s appearance could make Green Lantern: The Animated Series canon to Young Justice
Razer’s inclusion in the show could suggest that the event of Green Lantern: The Animated Series is canon to Young Justice, given that Green Lantern is rather absent from the show most times. However, given that all DC shows exist in the same Multiverse, it is possible that the characters who appear on Young Justice are just different versions of the characters from another part of the multiverse.
DC has had a slew of shows that have done their particular characters justice, such as Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, and Green Lantern: The Animated Series. More often than not, these shows are the work of Bruce Timm, who has been routinely hailed as one of the best superhero creators of our time, thanks to his contribution to making characters like Harley Quinn and Razer, who appeared in his shows before they appeared in the comics.
