How did Bradley Cooper bag his second directorial project?

Bradley Cooper‘s second directorial film, Maestro, will soon mark its release, and looking at the previous directorial work of Cooper, it seems like things are in the right hands. The plot of the film will soon be revealed upon its release, but the story behind how Cooper ended up with this project is no less interesting.

Previously, the actor appeared on Stephen Colbert’s show, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, and recalled how he ended up getting the project, which was originally meant to be directed by Steven Spielberg. The actor revealed that Spielberg approached Cooper to play the role of the lead protagonist, Leonard Bernstein. But Cooper certainly had different plans in his head.

Following the success of his first directorial project, Cooper got more inclined toward directing; hence, he decided to convince Spielberg to give him the project but for direction.

The actor invited Spielberg to watch an early cut of his directorial debut and hoped to impress the director so that he could get the chance to direct Maestro. The actor said,

“I’ll never forget this. He came, we were sitting there and I’m showing him ‘A Star Is Born’ and he’s all the way on the other side on the front row, it’s a pretty huge screen. It’s the scene where Jackson calls Ally up on the stage, it’s the biggest scene in the movie.

And right as she just is going on the stage he gets up and I’m like, ‘Oh he’s going to the bathroom now?’ and I was like, ‘That’s it, it’s over. If he’s going to the bathroom at this point in the movie… and he gets up, he walks over, and I’m putting my head down and the next thing I know I feel his face here and he says, because it’s loud, ‘You’re f—ing directing ‘Maestro!’”

The reason Cooper was so excited to grab the project was because he always had an obsession with conducting. So much so that, as a kid, he aspired to be a conductor. He told the host that he used to spend many hours practicing conducting as a kid. Hence, when he heard about the project being made on the legendary conductor he decided to do it.
