Hollywood star Hugh Grant worked together in the classic film Sense and Sensibility. The film was based on Jane Austen’s 1811 novel of the same name. It was a period drama film directed by Ang Lee. The film comprised Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet as leading actresses. Thompson also wrote the screenplay for the film. Grant and Thompson played a lovelorn couple, and their chemistry was admired by one and all.
However, reportedly the real-life chemistry of the actors was not too good as Hugh Grant was apparently very angry with his co-star in a particular scene.
Huge Grant was upset over Emma Thompson’s tears during his monologue
In an interview with New Yorker, the actress shared that her co-star Hugh Grant was frustrated to see her improvised tears during a scene when they were filming for Sense and Sensibility. The actress played the character of Elinor Dashwood, who was secretly in love with Grant’s character Edward Ferrars. But he was engaged to another woman, hence when she realizes that he did not get married, she becomes overwhelmed with emotions.
Thompson said,
“She was not aware of what was inside her, and it suddenly emerges. I was trying to make it as involuntary as possible. A case of the diaphragm taking over.”
She shared that Grant was upset on seeing her tears,
“Hugh Grant was so cross. He said, ‘You’re going to cry all the way through my speech?’ I said, ‘Hugh, I’ve got to. That’s the gag. It’s funny.’ And he says, ‘Yeah, but I’m speaking.’ I said, ‘I know.’”
Thompson received the Academy Award for Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published for her screenplay in film.
Huge Grant worked with Emma Thompson in Love Actually
The 2003 film reunited the two stars once again after Sense and Sensibility. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the actress recalled watching the movie first time with her co-star Hugh Grant. She shared,
“I remember him walking out behind me after we saw the premiere and saying, ‘I don’t know about you, but that’s the most psychotic thing I’ve ever appeared in. We had no idea people would become so fond of it.”
Love Actually is a film that comprises an interconnected ensemble in the five weeks, which is leading up to Christmas. In the different stories, people encounter love in different forms, from victorious to heartbreaking ways. Thompson and Grant play the roles of brother and sister in the film. Thompson was a housewife Karen, and Grant as David, was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Love Actually is considered a Christmas classic offering the feel-good experience of love and happiness with its plot.
In an interview with People in 2018, Hugh hailed Emma Thompson as a genius but added that she is not remotely sane. He joked she was getting nuttier and nuttier as the years go by.
