Ryan Reynolds did not have a similar childhood to most kids and the actor confessed that he and his brothers endured a time of real darkness. Talking to David Letterman, the Deadpool star said that despite the tough time, he and his brothers found the “slivers of light.” Most importantly, the brothers had each other’s back. But his brothers saved the actor from being in a terrible situation. “I remember, even in our rebellious moments, I wanted to get an earring as a kid,” Reynolds told Letterman. “I thought that would be a good idea, a cool thing to do. I was about 12 years old,” he added.

“My brothers said, ‘You’re gonna die. You’ll show up at dinner tonight. There’ll be a messy stabbing death. Dad will take one of the utensils and stab you.’ I went off with one of my friends and his mom. We went to Sears or wherever you go. She signed the consent form, I got an earring, I came home, and I remember my face being so flush with blood and heat, thinking about this impending disaster that was about to happen. And also really rooting and sitting in that rebellion of the moment too, like, ‘I’m doing something for me. I’m standing up to this.’”

The actor then got to the dinner table as he was sweating and looking down. And he could feel his gaze hitting the actor. His father muttered some “swear word under his breath or something, like ‘You fucks.’” When the actor looked up, he saw one of the most beautiful things in his life, all three of his brothers got earrings to save the actor.

Reynold’s father, James Chester Reynolds was a tough man, and growing up was not easy for the actor. “My dad was a tough guy,” Reynolds told of his father to Mr. Porter magazine. He was “a former cop, former boxer [and] full-time landmine,” he continued. Growing up “in my house, it was never relaxing or easy and I know that, throughout my life, I’ve dealt with anxiety in different ways,” he added. But his wife, Blake Lively stepped into resolving their fractured relationship and asked the actor to sort things out. The actor exactly did that with support from Lively and the duo named their first daughter James, after her grandfather. Chester Reynolds, however, died in 2015 after his hard battle with Parkinson’s.

“It felt right. All family relationships come with some complications. At the end of the day, it’s easier to focus on the good stuff than the bad. My father died soon after my daughter was born, but he got to see her, which makes me happy,” Reynolds said.

The 46-year-old later confessed that he “enjoyed getting a little bit older.” However, the anxiety never left him, and the actor still finds himself in a dark place. Fortunately for Reynolds, he found a way out and embraced humor and satire to deal with anxiety and support from his wife also contributed to his sound mental health.
