Just after acclaimed director Denis Villeneuve’s shocking remark on Wall Street and its influence on Hollywood, Insecure and American Fiction star Issa Rae followed up with the director explaining that the industry has been under the mercy of Wall Street. Rae boldly remarked after her Max show was canceled after 2 seasons.
Rae is a rising star in Hollywood, with her astounding prowess exceeding beyond acting. The Barbie actor also served as a writer and program creator. Further, the actor has a long list of movies and television credits to elevate her prowess. Still, witnessing the recent scenario in Hollywood, the actor found that the industry lacks the courage to rise above Wall Street.
Issa Rae Exposed Hollywood’s One Dirty Secret
The influence of Wall Street on Hollywood has been a wave that affected many filmmakers, including Dune director Denis Villeneuve. He recently claimed that the industry is still grappling with the clutch of it. Now, Vengeance star Issa Rae has come out with her bold remark on the same.
Speaking with Time magazine, Rae exposed much of Hollywood, which explains a lot about the fall of Hollywood. “I’ve never seen Hollywood this scared and clueless, and at the mercy of Wall Street,” she told the outlet. Rae-created Rap Sh!t was recently canceled at HBO after two seasons in which the actor also served as an executive producer.
“There is a bitterness of just like, who suffers from you guys pulling back? People of color always do. I’m sorry, but there aren’t a lot of smart executives anymore. And a lot of them have aged out and are holding on to their positions and refusing to let young blood get in… Now these conglomerate leaders are also making the decisions about Hollywood. Y’all aren’t creative people. Stick to the money. The people that are taking chances are on platforms like TikTok: that’s what’s getting the eyeballs of the youth. So you’re killing your own industry.”
However, the actor has not been scared of whatever changes Wall Street may govern. Her partnership with HBO is still intact with her previous signing with Warner Media.
Issa Rae Is Careful of Her Next Steps
Rae is of firm belief that the essence of careful steps in Hollywood is far greater than anything that a minor mistake might do to her evolving career. Rae’s dream holds a much greater purpose for her in the industry, slowly walking the steps to become a media mogul. But the actor will never slide the idea of securing her path without compromising her ideals.
“When you have all of these streaming services that are competing with each other, it means they’re also moving the goalposts of what success looks like and what their brand is. It’s all mush. I know what my brand identity is and what I want to make. But if that doesn’t align with who’s paying me to make stuff, then that’s complex. We are malleable, but only to an extent,” she told Time.
Of course, reevaluation is the key. As Hollywood has been under the impression of not having much faith in “smaller, quieter projects” only careful steps might rescue the star. Rae’s Rap Sh!t has seen astounding critical acclaim and can be streamed on Max.
