Everyone has a past, the bits and pieces of which are remembered sometimes by one and the people that were there to make them so memorable. But sometimes, these pasts are something that one would much rather forget, just like Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr, someone who isn’t too proud of the events that transpired in his life in his youth.

But unlike many who want their past to be wiped from their memories, the star always looked upon them, and motivated himself to become better, which has led to him being hailed as one the biggest names in the film industry today. And with it, he was able to change the preconceptions that everyone had about him, especially his MCU co-star.

Known for artistically bringing the character of Tony Stark to life in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade, Robert Downey Jr. is rightfully called the cornerstone of the MCU and a boon for Marvel Studios. But this wasn’t always the case, in fact, prior to arguably becoming the face of Hollywood, the star’s life was a wreck, to say the least. Multiple law offenses and a long case of substance abuse were associated with the star, which was also the reason he was sentenced to prison. Understandably, these factors led to his Iron Man co-star steering clear from her at first.

In a past interview, Gwyneth Paltrow, who played the role of Stark’s wife Pepper Potts in Iron Man and the rest of the MCU films, talked about how when she first met the Tropic Thunder star, she had the same preconceived notions about him, which included his troubled past. But as they worked together and built the MCU, she started to understand just how wonderful a person he was. In the interview, she mockingly said she wasn’t ready to kiss him, saying:

“With Robert, like, when I kissed him, I was like, ‘You’ve got to be kidding me, this is literally like kissing my brother.’”

And thus, Downey Jr. was able to completely turn himself around, which led to him making many friends and companions along the way.
