Director Zack Snyder reveals an unexpected insight that his upcoming two-part space opera film Rebel Moon and his Netflix zombie film franchise Army of the Dead share the same cinematic universe.
While elaborating Snyder says that his Army of the Dead has a pretty vast mythology that never made it into that film.
Army of the Dead was Supposed to Have an Animated Series Continuation
In a new interview with Total Film (via Games Radar), Zack Snyder went on to say how his film Army of the Dead and the upcoming Rebel Moon share a secret connection.
He also mentioned that it was supposed to have a Rebel Moon character in the Army of the Dead animated series, though it never happened.
“Army of the Dead has a pretty vast mythology that never made it into the movie. There’s actually a character from Rebel Moon in the animated series that we never did,” Snyder stated.
“We did all the scripts and the animatics, and all the voices are recorded. So you could watch it, even in its crazy animatic form – you can watch the whole run.”
Snyder thought of releasing a Netflix animated series Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas, a spinoff of his Army of the Dead films. But, the series also never came out. He said:
“At one point in the show, they go through a portal into another dimension, and there are characters in that other dimension that they come across. In Rebel Moon, they’re in this bar, and one of the aliens is one of the characters from the animatic. So it’s definitely a shared universe.”
The Army of the Dead series started in 2021 with the Army of the Dead movie, starring Dave Bautista and Ella Purnell.
What Is Rebel Moon About?
Zack Snyder, the director behind films such as 300, and Man of Steel is set to release his next film, Rebel Moon, an epic sci-fi adventure that follows a young woman named Kora (Sofia Boutella), who is tasked with finding warriors to join her cause, as she leads a rebellion against a tyrannical ruler.
Earlier, Snyder said that this would be his tribute to his favorite sci-fi films such as Star Wars as well as his inspiration Akira Kurosawa. He said to The Hollywood Reporter
“This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan; This is me growing up as an Akira Kurosawa fan, a Star Wars fan. It’s my love of sci-fi and a giant adventure. My hope is that this also becomes a massive IP and a universe that can be built out… I’ve spent the last two or three years building out this universe. Every corner has to be painted in. I’ve been doing designs, constantly drawing, and really cultivating its fertile ground to make this world fully realized.”
Rebel Moon Part 1 arrives on Netflix on December 22nd with Rebel Moon Part 2 coming on April 19th. Army of the Dead is now available on Netflix.
